Wildcat Softball Wins Final Five In Florida, Post 7-1 Record

CLERMONT, FL – It was another double header day for the Wayne State College softball team ending their time in Florida during the National Training Center Spring Games.

WSC closed their series of eight games in five days with two rematches against Clarion University (PA) and Alderson Broaddus University.

From the opening game, Clarion jumped ahead with two runs in the first before WSC tied the game with two runs in the second. Clarion University regained the lead scoring a run in the third, but for the last time. The ‘Cats poured in two runs during the fourth, four in the fifth and three more in the seventh to win 11-3.

Morgan Vasa singled twice and drove in a run as Abbie Hix homered driving in two runs for WSC. Ashley Hernandez and Taylor Menard both singled and drove in a run, Emily Chandler singled and Kamryn accounted for two RBI.

Maddie Moser (3-3) picked up the win in four innings allowing three earned runs off seven hits while walking two batters. Riley Vanderveen recorded the save in three innings allowing one hit while striking out two batters and walking three.

In the final game, both teams scored two runs before WSC posted a five-run third inning to lead 7-2. The ‘Cats added two more runs in the fifth before Alderson Broaddus tabbed a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh as Wayne State held on for the 9-5 win. The Wildcat softball team went 7-1 during their time in Florida to improve to 8-6.

Morgan Vasa posted a three-hit game with a RBI while Kortney Buresh added two singles and two RBI. Taylor Menard singled twice and drove in a run; Ashley Hernandez singled and drove in two runs; Baylee Rial doubled and drove in a run; Emily Chandler singled and drove in a run; Abbie Hix and Annie Grammer both singled while Kamryn Sparks accounted for a RBI.

Makenna Adkison (5-3) recorded the win in six innings allowing four earned runs off six hits while striking out seven batters, walking four and hitting two. Riley Vanderveen worked an inning allowing an earned run off one hit.

The Wayne State College softball will compete in their final preseason tournament in the Missouri Western Tournament Friday, March 22 – Sunday, March 24.
