Wildcat Softball Splits Monday Afternoon Games, Are 2-2 During Spring Trip

CLERMONT, FL – The Wayne State College softball team was right back in action during the National Training Center Spring Games, this time battling Notre Dame College (Ohio) and #13 Southern Indiana from Legends Way Field in Clermont, Florida.

In the third contest of the NTC Spring Games WSC jumped out front with a two-run first inning while Notre Dame College (Ohio) added a pair of runs in the top of the second. Wayne State College regained the lead in the home half of the second with a run and tacked on another run in the fifth to win 4-2. Notre Dame is now 0-2 on the season.

Senior Jordyn Breitbarth paced WSC at the plate with a home run, single and RBI while junior Emily Chandler added a pair of singles. Senior Rachel Shumaker tacked on a single and RBI.

Freshman Maddie Moser picked up the complete game win (1-2) in seven innings allowing two earned runs off of four hits while striking out seven batters and walking another two.

From the fourth game in two days, WSC fell behind to #13 Southern Indiana who tallied a run in the first and second innings. After both teams were scoreless in the third, Southern Indiana posted a four-run fourth inning to lead 6-0. Wayne State College started to mount a comeback with a 4-2 fifth inning, but gave up another run in the sixth to lose 9-4. Wayne State College is now 3-6 on the season while #13 Southern Indiana improved to 10-5.

Senior Katelyn Wobken and Chandler each recorded a pair of singles and RBI while freshman Ashley Hernandez singled twice. Shumaker tripled and drove in a run, Breitbarth doubled as junior Alyx Hagen singled and drove in a run.

Junior Riley Vanderveen suffered the complete game loss (1-2) in six innings allowing nine runs (six earned) off of 15 hits while striking out four batters and walking three.

The Wayne State College softball team will get Tuesday off before closing out the National Training Center Spring Games on Wednesday, March 7 against Stonehill (MA) and Lewis (Ill) while games on Thursday, March 8 will be against Mercyhurst (PA) and Findlay (OH). Both games will be at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. each day.
