Wildcat Softball Opens Hy-Vee Classic 0-2

ST. JOSEPH, MO – The Wayne State College softball team began the Hy-Vee Classic over the weekend with a pair of games in two locations.

First from St. Joseph, Minnesota the ‘Cats faced Missouri Western and Washburn on Saturday.

In the opener with the host Missouri Western, the Griffon’s opened with a 10-run first inning while both teams scored two runs in the second. Missouri Western added five more runs in the third and one run in the fourth to win 18-2.

Senior Jordyn Breitbarth recorded a double and RBI while senior Katelyn Wobken singled and drove in a run. Junior Emily Chandler added a double.

Junior Riley Vanderveen suffered the loss (3-5) in two innings allowing 10 earned runs off of nine hits while walking three batters and striking out one batter. Freshman Maddie Moser worded the other two innings allowing eight runs (two earned) off of four hits while walking six batters and striking out one.

During the second game, Washburn picked up a run in the first and third innings to lead 2-0. Then, in the fifth both teams tallied three runs as Washburn added one more run in the seventh to win 6-3. Wayne State College fell to then 6-11.

Junior Alyx Hagen recorded a three-run homer followed by Wobken adding a pair of singles.

Moser suffered the loss (2-4) in seven innings allowing six runs (three earned) off of 11 hits while striking out and walking three batters.

The Wildcat softball team will be back in action Sunday with Northwest Missouri State and Central Missouri from Maryville, Missouri.
