WAYNE – Several teams who represented their conference had to go through Wayne to get to the national championships this year for rugby 7s.
From the Wayne Rugby Park, WSC hosted the Great Plains Women’s and Men’s Regional 7s Tournament Saturday. This was the first-ever National College Rugby sanctioned event (previously NSCRO).
The Wayne State women made their way through the early stages of matches with a 43-12 win over South Dakota State before winning 43-5 over Kansas State University/Benedictine College combined and 42-5 against Iowa State. WSC was tripped up by Northern Iowa, 20-19 in the championship match.
For the Wildcat men, they shutout St. Scholastica (MN) 47-0 and 48-0 while edging Central College of Iowa 22-14 and 21-12. WSC was crowned men’s division 7s champions.
Both the Wayne State College women and men have advanced to nationals in New Orleans, Louisiana May 29 – 31 for CRC (College Rugby Championships) 7s.
