Wildcat Rugby Programs Bring Back Third Place Finishes In Respective Brackets During 7s Championships

WAYNE – Although the Wayne State College women’s and men’s rugby teams didn’t make it to the finals in their respective brackets, both teams finished the 2021 Collegiate Rugby Championship May Madness 7s on a winning note.

From the Gold Mine on Arline in New Orleans, Louisiana, the home of NOLA Gold for Major League Rugby, the Wayne State College women and men took part in a handful of games between Saturday, May 29 – Monday, May 31.

The Wildcat women took third in the Premier Cup while the WSC men placed third in the Challenge Bowl.

CRC Women’s Division Finals: Lindenwood University defeated Life University, 10-7 in the Premier Cup; South Atlantic Rugby Conference #2 defeated South Atlantic Rugby Conference #1, 31-10 in the Survivor Shield; Baldwin Wallace defeated Grace College, 17-7 in the Challenge Bowl and Davenport defeated Bryant, 17-15 in the Champion Plate

The Wildcat women entered as the #3 seed in the Premier Cup Bracket and defeated #6 Baldwin Wallace, 26-0 before eliminating #2 Davenport, 19-14. In the semifinal round, #1 Life University defeated WSC, 47-0 as the ‘Cats avenged their regional tournament loss with a 42-5 victory over #2 Northern Iowa in the consolation round.

 

CRC Men’s Division Finals: Lindenwood University defeated Life University, 24 – 14 in the Premier Cup; McKendree defeated New Mexico Tech, 26-17 in the Survivor Shield; Central College defeated Taylor, 24-10 in the Challenge Bowl while Wheeling defeated Denver, 19-14 in the Champion Plate.

The Wildcats earned the #7 seed to start the Premier Cup Bracket but lost in the first round to #2 Western Michigan, 34-7. WSC then suffered a 26-17 loss to #6 Franciscan in the Survivor Shield Bracket before earning a bye in the Challenge Bowl Bracket. Wayne State lost to #7 Central College, 19-10 but closed out the trip with a 48-0 win over #7 St. Scholastica in the consolation round of the Challenge Bowl.
