WAYNE – A handful of Wildcat track and field competitors have been announced as national qualifiers for a late May championship meet.
According to a release from Wayne State Athletics, the Wayne State College women’s track and field team has qualified in three events while the WSC men will send two individuals for the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Track and Field Championships May 26 – 28 in Allendale, Michigan and hosted by Grand Valley State University.
For the Wildcat women, graduate student Mckenzie Scheil is a national qualifier in the hammer throw and shot put for a second straight season while junior Brooklynn Chipps is a national qualifier in the hammer throw.
Scheil, a graduate of Fillmore Central HS, ranks second in NCAA Division II in the hammer throw with top mark of 201’ 4” at the Wildcat Classic (March 25). She won the hammer throw at last weekend’s NSIC Championships in Aberdeen, South Dakota at 184’ 7” and is a two-time All-American in the event, placing second last year to go with a seventh place finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Scheil will compete in the hammer throw on Thursday, May 26tth at 2:30 p.m. Central Time.
Scheil is a repeat national qualifier in the shot put, where she posted a season-best mark of 47’ 5 ¾” at the South Dakota Twilight Meet May 6th. She ranks 18th in NCAA Division II in the event and will compete at nationals on Saturday, May 28th at 10:15 a.m.
Chipps, a junior from Elgin (Clearwater HS), ranks fourth in NCAA Division II in the hammer throw after a top mark of 197’ 11” at the South Dakota Challenge April 21. It’s her first time as a national outdoor qualifier after she made the NCAA Indoor Nationals in March in the weight throw. Chipps will compete in the hammer throw at nationals on Thursday, May 26th at 2:30 p.m.
For the Wildcat men, Cole Christoffersen, a graduate student from Lyons (Lyons-Decatur HS), is a national qualifier in the hammer throw. He posted a season-best mark of 200’ 7” at the South Dakota Challenge April 21st and has the 14th-best mark in NCAA Division II this season. Christoffersen is coming off a second place finish (189’ 5”) at last weekend’s NSIC Championships in Aberdeen, South Dakota and will compete in the event on Thursday, March 26th at 11:30 a.m. Central Time. It’s his first time as an NCAA outdoor national qualifier and second time in his career (2021 indoor – weight throw) that Christoffersen is an NCAA national track qualifier.
Also, Dylan Kneifl, a sophomore from Pilger (Wisner-Pilger HS), is a first-time national qualifier in the high jump after setting a new school record clearing 6’ 11 ½” at last weekend’s NSIC Championships to place second in the event. He is tied for the 10th-best mark in NCAA Division II this season and will compete at nationals in the high jump on Friday, May 27th at 2:30 p.m. Central Time.
