Wildcat Men Open Conference Play With Road Victory, Win Fifth Straight

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Saturday night opened the first league game of the season for the Wayne State College men’s basketball team.

From the Sioux Falls Arena, it was also the first meeting of two in the month of December between Wayne State College and Augustana University.

WSC led early, 33-25 and extended their lead in the second half (32-29). The Wayne State men secured their first win at Augie since 2010 as the ‘Cats won 65-54 to win their fifth in a row. WSC is now 6-1 (1-0 NSIC) as the Vikings fell to 3-3 (0-1 NSIC).

Vance Janssen posted a team-high 16 points and four assists on 5-9 shooting from the field (1-4 3PT) along with 5-6 from the foul line. Kendall Jacks added 15 points, Jordan Janssen recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds as Nick Ferrarini tallied 11 points. Other scoring came from Trevin Joseph (seven points), Al’Tavius Jackson (three) and Ben Dentlinger (two).

Dentlinger picked up a team-high three blocks and Jordan Janssen added two steals.

WSC finished 23-62 (37.1%) from the field, 6-25 (24%) from behind the arc and 13-18 (72.2%) from the foul line.

A.J. Pitzuweit paced Augie with 14 points, Michael Schaefer picked up 11 points along with Tyler Riemersma with a double-double scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Augustana shot 20-59 (33.9%) from the floor, 5-19 (26.3%) from the three-point line and 9-11 (81.8%) from the charity stripe.

The Wayne State College men will join their women on Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8. WSC will visit Upper Iowa Friday at 7:30 p.m. and play at Winona State on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
