SIOUX FALLS, SD – After being preseason selected to finish last in the NSIC South Division Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the Wayne State College men’s basketball team was crowned division champions Sunday afternoon.
Following a Saturday late afternoon 60-57 road loss at Augustana University, WSC returned to the Sanford Pentagon and got even with the Vikings Sunday afternoon.
Wayne State held Augustana to just 37% shooting from the field closing out the year with an 82-70 road victory and NSIC South Division title. WSC is now 10-6 overall (10-4 NSIC) and are 7-1 in road games while the Vikings got some help from a Southwest Minnesota overtime victory over Sioux Falls to get into the conference tourney with a 9-6 (7-6 NSIC) record at the number four seed.
WSC outscored Augie 42-33 in the opening half and 42-40 in the second half to again win 82-70.
Junior Nate Mohr paced WSC in scoring with 21 points (6-12 FG/5-7 3PT/4-4 FT) while junior Jordan Janssen added 17 points and four assists (6-12 FG/5-8 FT). Senior Ben Dentlinger poured in 16 points and blocked three shots (6-8 FG/4-4 FT), freshman Alec Millender had 12 points and six assists (4-10 FG/2-2 3PT/2-2 FT) as freshman Cody McCullough closed out the double figure scoring while also recording a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards (3-4 FG/5-6 FT).
Other scoring came from freshman Zach LaFave with three points while freshman Jay Saunders and junior Nate Thayer both scored a point.
WSC shot 26-51 (51%) from the field, 8-12 (66.7%) from behind the arc and 22-29 (75.9%) from the foul line.
Augie leaders Dylan LeBrun with 21 points, Michael Schaefer with 17 points, Tyler Riemersma added 12 points and 22 boards while Adam Dykman finished with 10 points.
Augie finished 22-59 (37.3%) from the field, 6-23 (26.1%) from the three-point line and 820-28 (71.4%) from the charity stripe.
