CRETE – After competing in a pre-season open in early December, the Wayne State College women’s and men’s indoor track and field team began a busy month of January over the weekend.
WSC competed in the Doane Invite held in Crete, Nebraska Saturday. The number of teams at the meet were reduced due to a snow/ice storm in southern Nebraska and Kansas, but saw Hastings College, Iowa Western Community College, Midland, Mount Marty, William Penn and Wayne State along with host Doane attend.
The Wayne State women were led by going 1-2-3 in the 3,000-meter run and also top five finishes in the field.
Sophomore Allie Rosener won the 3,000-meter run in a time of 10:57.86 followed by Jade Rickard (11:00.51) and Andrea Torres (11:24.85).
In the field Mckenzie Scheil placed second in the weight throw (58’ 5 ¾”) and third in the shot put (44’ 1 ¼”). Another runner-up finish came from Kim Johnson in the one-mile run (5:43.40), Jordyn Pester took second in the 400-meter dash (1:02.28) while Ali Dykman tied for second in the high jump clearing 5’ 3”.
Kenzie Sullivan collected a third-place mark in the weight throw (53’ 6 ½”) followed by Tia Jones in sixth (50’ 2 1/2”) and Sarah Stang seventh at 49’ 6 ½”. Jones also took eighth in the shot put (39’ ½”).
Other top Wildcat finishes were Brianna Crouch fourth in the one-mile run (6:01.62), Joan Jelimo fourth in the 600-meter run at 1:45.19, Marin Jetensky fifth in the one-mile run (6:05.96) and Amanda Mote seventh at 6:12.98.
Hanna Lazure was sixth in the high jump at 5’ 1”.
Top performers for the Wildcat men saw Cade Kalkowski and Dylan Kaup go one and two in the weight throw, recording marks of 63’ 6 ¾ and 62’ 1 ¾” respectively.
Ben Allen posted a fifth-place finish in the shot put (49’ 6 ¼”) while Mikhail Sands was sixth in the long jump at 21’ 9”.
In the running events, the 4 x 800-meter relay team of Bryce Holcomb, Nathan Pearson, Brock Hegarty and Nathan Hiemer ran a time of 8:18.42.
Pearson posted a fourth-place finish in the one-mile run (4:40.04) with teammates Holcomb and Hegarty finishing fifth and seventh with times of 4:40.43 and 4:45.96.
Preston Davis came in sixth place in the 60-meter hurdle finals (8.73) and was ninth in the 400-meter dash in 53.95 seconds.
Other Wildcat finishers included – Dylan Kessler sixth in the 3,000-meter run (9:32.26), Michael Kueny seventh in the 400-meter dash (53.47) and Bailey Peckham seventh in the 3,000-meter run at 9:33.66.
The Wayne State College women’s and men’s indoor track & field teams will next compete in the Dordt College Invite on Saturday, December 18 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
