WAYNE – Another change in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s and men’s basketball schedule came down the line earlier this week.
According to the northernsun.org website, doubleheaders have been eliminated as women’s and men’s teams will play the same opponent but at different locations each weekend starting January 2 from the original schedule released on November 13.
The approval from the NSIC Board of Directors is tied to a COVID-19 testing cadence supported by the NCAA Sports Science Institute (SSI) Resocialization of Collegiate Sport guidance.
Wayne State College will still open their season on Saturday and Sunday, January 2 – 3 against Northern State but the women’s team will be on the road and men’s team at Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College.
Road games times are still being determined as below is the remainder of the schedule:
Friday and Saturday, January 8 – 9: WSC women vs. Concordia-St. Paul and WSC men at CSP
Friday and Saturday, January 15 – 16: WSC women at Minnesota State-Mankato and WSC men vs. the Mavericks
Friday and Saturday, January 22 – 23: WSC women at Upper Iowa and WSC men vs. the Peacocks
Friday and Saturday, January 29 – 30: WSC women vs. Winona State and WSC men at the Warriors
Friday and Saturday, February 5 – 6: WSC women at Sioux Falls and WSC men vs. the Cougars
Friday and Saturday, February 12 – 13: WSC women vs. Southwest Minnesota State and WSC men at the Mustangs
Friday and February, January 19 – 20: WSC women vs. Augustana and WSC men at Augie
The NSIC men’s and women’s basketball schedules will be 16-games played over eight weeks. The season will start with two non-division games against one NSIC out-of-division opponent. The conference schedule will then consist of 14 games with teams playing each member of its division twice. For this season, the NSIC will only crown a North Division and South Division Champion.
Enhanced preseason reveals will be announced next week for all winter sports. The reveals will include preseason coaches’ polls, preseason players of the year, preseason student-athletes to watch, team previews and quotes from coaches.
The conference will continue to monitor the landscape and conditions surrounding the pandemic locally, regionally and nationally, and make any decisions or announcements at a later date as necessary.
