Wildcat Basketball Resumes 2020 Schedule With Two South Division Opponents

WAYNE – Over the next two months the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams will be in action each weekend with four home and four away doubleheaders.

Following a moratorium break and not playing a conference game since December 21, the Wildcats are back in action this Friday and Saturday, January 3-4.

WSC will entertain Sioux Falls Friday night at 5:30/7:30 p.m. while Southwest Minnesota State comes to town on Saturday at 3:30/5:30 p.m.

The Wayne State women are 9-3 overall and in a four-way tie for first in the south division with #18 Sioux Falls, Winona State and Minnesota State-Mankato at 4-2. For the men, WSC has dropped four straight to sit 5-10 on the season 2-4 (sixth/South) in league play.

The Wildcat women have won two-consecutive outings after last topping Augustana 77-64 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on December 21.

#18 USF sits 11-2 (4-2 NSIC) while SMSU enters the weekend at 5-6 (0-6 NSIC).

A year ago, WSC took on Sioux Falls three times falling at USF (81-59), losing at home (77-72) and then in the quarterfinal round of the conference tourney (103-76). Wayne State topped the Mustangs (76-74) in Marshall, Minnesota and won (72-67) in Wayne. The last time Wayne State defeated the Cougars was on February 10, 2018 (64-51) in Wayne while the Wildcats have won 20 straight against SMSU.

The Wayne State men are still in search for their first road win of the season (0-9 away from Rice) but will look to add to their 5-1 home season. WSC recently lost at Augustana (74-72).

The Cougar men are tied for first in the south with Augustana at 5-1 in league play and 9-3 overall as Southwest Minnesota State enters the weekend 4-8 (1-5 NSIC).

Last season, Sioux Falls beat WSC twice, 79-77 in Wayne and 77-71 in Sioux Falls while the Wildcats won two of three matchups vs. the Mustangs. WSC defeated SMSU in the regular season 75-68 in Marshall and 86-77 in Wayne while Southwest Minnesota State topped WSC 84-78 in overtime in the NSIC Tournament semifinals in Sioux Falls.

The Wayne State men last defeated USF in Wayne (78-64) on February 10, 2018.

Wayne State College will then visit Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls on Friday and Saturday, February 21-22 to close out the regular season.
