Wildcat Baseball Uses Seven-Run Inning In Second Game To Split With Minnesota Duluth

WAYNE – The Wayne State College baseball team was back on a neutral field for the second straight week after having their home games moved due to field conditions.

WSC took on Minnesota Duluth from Riverside Park in Yankton, South Dakota Thursday morning and afternoon.

In the opening contest with the Bulldogs, UMD strung runs together of one in the second, two in the third and one more in the fourth to lead 4-0. The Wildcats mounted a comeback with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh but came up short. Minnesota Duluth won the first game, 4-2.

Freshman Andrew Hanson doubled while sophomore Jackson Petersen and senior Tanner Simons each singled. WSC scored one run on a throwing error and another on a wild pitch while striking out eight times.

Sophomore Aidan Breedlove suffered the loss (1-2) in five innings of work allowing four runs (three earned) off of eight hits while striking out five batters and walking three more. Senior Brady Johnson pitched the final two innings allowing one hit while walking one batter.

During the second game, Minnesota Duluth again struck first with two runs during the first inning. Following a pair of scoreless innings, WSC opened up a seven-run fourth inning to take control and lead 7-2. The ‘Cats tacked on one more run in the fifth and held on for the 8-2 win. With the split, WSC is now 7-9 (5-1 NSIC) while UMD sits 5-9 (1-1 NSIC).

Hanson came around with a grand slam and single to go along with four RBI to pace WSC. Junior Jake Lorenzini and Petersen each accounted for a double while driving in a run as junior Garrett Graveline singled twice and drove in a run and junior Kyle Thompson singled and drove in a run. Senior David Janes and junior Travis Miller both singled twice while sophomore Peyton Barnes doubled.

Freshman Aaron Ras picked up the win (2-1) in six innings allowing two earned runs off of five hits hits while striking out five and walking four batters. Sophomore Isaac Rubendall worked an inning striking out two batters as junior Jordan Mehl pitched an inning walking two batters and striking out one. Sophomore Lawson Zenner pitched the final inning allowing one hit and struck out three batters.

Wayne State and Minnesota Duluth will meet again Friday with an earlier start of 11 a.m. at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne due to the weather.
