Wildcat Baseball Enters Postseason Tournament With Two Wins Over Top 10 Opponent

SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Wayne State College baseball team wrapped up their 2018 regular season with #10 Augustana Sunday afternoon.

From the third contest over the weekend, both teams opened scoring with three runs in the first inning. WSC added a run in the second while the Vikings took the lead following a two-run third inning. Wayne State College then posted a five-run seventh inning to win 9-5.

Junior Kyle Thompson paced WSC at the plate with a three-run homer and a single while sophomore Bryce Bisenius added a three-run homer. Senior Tanner Simons tacked on a two-run homer as freshman Alex Logelin tripled. Junior Jake Lorenzini and sophomore Jackson Peterson both singled.

Sophomore Lawson Zenner picked up the win (4-3) in an inning and two-thirds allowing one hit while striking out four batters and walking one. Sophomore Aidan Breedlove started the opening five and a third innings allowing five earned run off of seven hits while striking out and walking three batters each.

In the final game, #10 Augustana jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning before WSC scored three runs in the second inning. Augie picked up one run in the third before re-taking the lead with a 3-1 sixth inning. Both teams scored two runs in the eighth inning, WSC tied the game back up with a 2-1 ninth inning and posted a three-run inning in extras to hold on for the 11-8 win. With the sweep, the ‘Cats improved to 20-24 (18-16 NSIC) while the Vikings fell to 40-8 (26-8 NSIC).

Freshman Andrew Hanson recorded a solo homerun, three singles and three RBI to pace WSC while junior Travis Miller added a solo homerun, three singles and two RBI. Thompson singled three times, doubled once and drove in one run. Simons picked up a single, triple and RBI.

WSC used six pitchers as Zenner picked up another win (5-3) in an inning allowing an earned run off of two hits while senior Brady Johnson recorded his first save of the season as he allowed one hit and struck out one batter. Sophomore Isaac Rubendall started the first three innings allowing two runs (one earned) off of three hits while striking out two batters and walking one; senior Spencer Johnson worked two innings allowing one hit while walking one batter; junior Charles Hasty pitched an inning allowing three earned runs off of three hits and redshirt freshman Cedric Moreno worked two innings allowing two earned runs off of two hits while striking out one batter.

The Wayne State College baseball team has earned the #7 seed and will compete with #2 Augustana again on Wednesday, May 9 at 6 p.m. form Karras Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

SF Stadium: #5 Concordia-St. Paul vs. #4 Minnesota State-Mankato at 12:30 p.m.
