AUBURNDALE, FL – After securing a shutout non-conference win over a NSIC opponent, the Wayne State College baseball team closed out their time in the RussMatt Invitational Wednesday evening.
The ‘Cats competed with #14 Ashland (Ohio) in Auburndale, Florida.
WSC jumped ahead early with a 4-2 opening inning before Ashland drove in four runs in the second to go up 6-4. WSC then tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth but Ashland regained the lead with single runs in the sixth and eighth to win 8-6. WSC is now 8-7 while #14 Ashland improves to 9-3.
Jake Lemar posted a pair of singles, a double and drove in two runs while Brendan Madsen added two singles and two runs scored. Alex Logelin singled, doubled and drove in a run as Bryce Bisenius singled twice, scored and drove in a run. Noah Roberts and CJ Neumann both singled, scored and drove in a run as Andrew Hanson also scored.
Lawson Zenner suffered the loss in an inning allowing an earned run off one hit while striking out three batters. Aaron Ras started the opening inning and a third allowing five earned runs off one hit while walking three batters, hitting two and striking out one. Ryan Petersen worked three and two-thirds allowing an earned run off five hits while striking out one batter; Logan Walters pitched an inning allowing one hit as Andrew Staebell came in for the final inning allowing an earned run off one hit while walking two batters and striking out one.
WSC is next scheduled to open league play with Northern State University this weekend. The ‘Cats topped Northern State 8-0 earlier this week.
