WHS Softball Places Runner-Up In Adams Central Invite

HASTINGS – As the Blue Devil softball program looks to close out their regular season this week with a road contest and conference tourney, WHS took part in the Adams Central Invite.

From the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings, Wayne High joined seven other teams in the invitational Saturday.

The Blue Devils started with a dominant 12-0 victory over Polk County and made quick work of Hastings St. Cecilia 14-2 before falling to Kearney Catholic in the finals, 10-2. WHS saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end but are now 17-3 on the year.

During the win over Polk County, WHS scored a run in first before adding three runs in the second and eight more in the third.

Brooklyn Kruse recorded a homerun, two RBI and a run scored while Hope O’Reilly singled, doubled and scored for Wayne. Virginia Kniesche singled twice, drove in four runs and scored; Brianna Nissen singled, drove in two runs and scored; Kierah Haase singled, drove in a run and scored twice; both Taytum Sweetland and Mikaela McManigal singled, drove in a run and scored; Kendall Dorey singled as Nikki Fertig and Hailey Schroeder both scored twice.

Dorey picked up the win in three innings striking out five batters.

From the victory against Hastings. St. Cecilia, the Blue Devil scored seven runs in the second and two more in the fourth to lead 9-0. WHS also outscored St. Cecilia 5-2 in the fifth to win 14-2.

Kniesche doubled, tripled, drove in a run and scored twice while O’Reilly singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice for Wayne. Dorey singled three times and drove in two runs; Kruse singled and scored three times; Haase singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice; Sweetland singled twice, drove in run and scored; both Robbins and McManigal singled, drove in a run and scored; Logan Miller singled twice and drove in a run; Nissen accounted for a RBI and Schroeder scored twice.

Dorey picked up the win in five innings allowing two runs (one earned) off two hits while striking out and walking four batters each.

In the championship loss to Kearney Catholic, WHS took the early lead at 2-0 in the first but gave up six runs in the second. Kearney Catholic scored another four runs in the fourth to win 10-2.

Dorey posted a homerun, two RBI and run scored while Kniesche singled and scored for Wayne. Other singles came from Sweetland, McManigal and Haase.

Dorey suffered the complete game loss in five innings allowing 10 runs off four hits while striking out three batters and walking seven.

The Wayne High softball team will next visit GACC on Thursday, October 1 before competing in the Mid State Conference Tournament back in West Point on Saturday.
