O’NEILL – All five youth baseball teams from Didgets, Broncos and Ponies hit to the road for a northeast Nebraska showdown.
The Wayne teams traveled to O’Neill Saturday afternoon as O’Neill went 4-1 against the Wayne White Didgets/Broncos, Blue Didgets/Broncos and Ponies.
For the Wayne White Didgets, they suffered a 22-6 defeat to O’Neill Saturday falling to 0-2 on the season. Evan Greve and Jahiem Hamik both recorded a pair of hits while Karter Hayes tripled.
From the Wayne White Broncos contest, O’Neill won 12-2 as Wayne fell to 0-2.
Will Leseberg recorded a pair of singles, Gavin Anderson singled, drove in a run and scored as Lance Stange singled and drove in a run. Drew Reinhardt singled and scored and Mason Karsky singled.
Anderson worked two and a third innings allowing six runs (three earned) off two hits while striking out five batters and walking two. Zander Liston pitched an inning and two-thirds allowing four earned runs off four hits while striking out four batters and walking one as Leseberg saw time pitching the final inning allowing two runs while striking out and walking two batters each.
The Wayne White Didgets will be off until Thursday, June 25 when they visit the West Point Twins at 6 p.m. The Wayne White Broncos are right back in action Monday evening hosting Pierce at 6/7:30 p.m.
During the Blue Didgets outing, O’Neill defeated Wayne 7-4. Wayne is now 1-1 on the season.
In the Blue Broncos contest, O’Neill topped Wayne 17-1. The Blue Broncos are now 3-1 overall.
The lone Wayne Blue Broncos run came from Jace Jorgensen with a solo homerun. Five of the seven starting pitchers were out of town for the weekend playing on the Northeast Nebraska Crush and Omaha teams.
The Wayne Blue Didgets and Broncos will next host Dodge-Howells on Monday, June 22 at 6/7:30 p.m.
The Wayne Pony baseball team also got their season underway over the weekend against O’Neill securing a weekend win. Wayne topped O’Neill in nine innings by the score of 17-8 to open their season at 1-0.
Kaleb Moormeier opened the game with a lead-off homerun as Devin Anderson went 2-for-4 with a double and triple. Kaden Keller and Jase Dean both added two hits as Alex Frank, Ryan Karsky, Jameson Meyer and Caden Wiese all singled.
Moormeier worked the opening three innings allowing one run while striking out five batters and walking one. Anderson worked an inning allowing three runs while striking out three batters and walking four. Keller pitched a pair of innings striking out five batters and walking four as Dean worked the final three innings allowing four runs while striking out six batters and walking one.
The Wayne Ponies will have their scheduled home game with the West Point Patriots Monday evening be rescheduled to a later date. West Point didn’t have enough players to field a team.
Northeast Nebraska Crush results saw the 9U team (players from Battle Creek, Norfolk, Winside, Laurel and Wayne) defeated Pender 10U in doubleheader action 14-3 and 11-3 Saturday. The NE 9U Crush will next visit Norfolk Steel 10U for a pair of exhibition games on Tuesday, June 23 at 5/7 p.m.
