WAYNE – Friends became foes for a couple hours when the Wayne white and blue bronco youth baseball teams competed amongst one another in postseason play Thursday.
From the Summer Sports Complex, the 2019 Bronco Tri-County League Tournament held a quarterfinal round game between ##3 Wayne blue and #6 Wayne white.
The whites jumped ahead early with a four-run first as Wayne blue answered with three runs in the home half of the inning. Both teams were even the remainder of the game with single runs scored in the second, scoreless third and fourth innings, a run each in the fifth and no runs in the sixth for a final of 6-5 in favor of Wayne white. The whites improved to 10-3 while Wayne blue ended their season at 10-3.
Alex Rodriguez recorded a pair of singles, one double and three RBI while Devin Anderson singled, doubled and drove in a run for Wayne white. Jamison Meyer singled and drove in two runs; Gavin Anderson singled as Drew Reinhardt singled twice.
Devin Anderson picked up the win in five innings allowing five runs (four earned) off six hits while striking out 10 batters and walking one. Kaleb Moormeier worked the final inning striking out two batters.
Gavin Redden doubled and tripled while Jace Jorgensen singled twice for Wayne blue. Alex Frank tripled and drove in a run; Jase Dean singled and drove in a run as Kaden Keller singled.
Jorgensen suffered the loss an inning allowing five runs (two earned) off three hits while walking one batter. Gavin Redden worked four innings allowing one run off four hits while striking out seven batters as Kaden Keller pitched the final inning striking out two batters and walking one.
#6 Wayne white will next face #7 Columbus Lakeview on Saturday, July 13 in Stanton as Lakeview defeated #2 Pender red (11-6). On the other half of the bracket, #1 Oakland-Craig Sluggers white defeated #9 West Point Yankees (14-4) as #5 Pender white topped #13 Stanton (18-10).
The 2019 Tri-Co didget and pony brackets will compete in their semi-final and championship games this evening.
From Hooper in didget play, #1 Wayne white will face #5 Wayne blue at 6 p.m. followed by #3 Schuyler green vs. #7 Howells/Dodge at 8 p.m. in semi-final play. The consolation and championship round will be back in Hooper on Sunday, July 14 at 6 p.m. for the third-place game and title contest at 8 p.m.
Moving to Pender, the consolation pony game between #2 West Point Patriots vs. #4 Oakland-Craig will open the night at 5:30 p.m. followed by #1 Pierce blue vs. #3 Wayne. The Wayne ponies are looking to extend their four-peat of league tournament championships as they’ve won each year since 2015.
