WAYNE/SCRIBNER – After being off for several weeks, both the Wayne Post 43 and Wakefield Post 81 Senior American Legion baseball teams are ready for postseason competition this weekend.
Following seeding meetings Tuesday evening the northeast Nebraska teams found out their opponent.
Class B and C Senior Area Tournaments last from Friday, July 23 – Tuesday, July 27 with Wednesday, July 28 being for any delays.
Wayne is the host for the Class B Area 5 Tournament. Post 43 earned the #2 seed and will play #3 Pierce at 7 p.m. on Friday. The other first round game will feature #4 O’Neill vs. #5 Stanton at 4 p.m. to open the day as Columbus Lakeview earned the #1 seed with a bye into Saturday.
The Wayne Seniors are 13-4 and were last in action on Wednesday, July 7 when Post 43 defeated Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells, 11-3. Wayne has split with the Pierce Seniors this year defeating Pierce, 11-3 in Pierce on June 2 but falling 8-4 on July 2 in Wayne during the Ralph Bishop League tournament semifinal.
The Stanton/O’Neill loser will face the Pierce/Wayne loser at 1 p.m. on Saturday followed by the Stanton/O’Neill winner vs. #1 Columbus Lakeview at 4 p.m. The Pierce/Wayne winner will be off on Saturday and advance to Sunday’s 4 p.m. game against the Lakeview/Stanton/O’Neill winner being one win away from Tuesday’s finals. Elimination games are also scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m.
The finals will be at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27.
Another area host will be West Point in the Class B Area 3 tourney. The host #1 West Point will earn a bye into Saturday awaiting the winner of either #4 Arlington or #5 Albion who open Friday at 2:30 p.m. #3 Waterloo-Valley will face #6 Fort Calhoun at 5 p.m. as #2 ETC Knights close out the night vs. #7 Blair at 7:30 p.m.
For Wakefield Post 81, they were selected as the #2 seed and will face #5 Tekamah-Herman at 4 p.m. on Friday in Scribner during the Class C Area 2 tourney. #1 Pender will face #6 Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells at 1 p.m. on Friday to open the day while the host #3 Hooper-Scribner will close out the night vs. #6 North Bend/Morse Bluff at 7 p.m.
The Wakefield Seniors are 6-12 and last suffered an 8-0 loss against Dakota Valley on July 13.
Saturday’s first game will open with an elimination game between the loser of either Pender/Wisner and Wakefield/T-H at 1 p.m. followed by Pender/Wisner winner will face the loser of either Hooper-Scribner or NB/MB at 4 p.m. and the Wakefield/T-H winner will face the winner of either Hooper-Scribner or NB/MB at 7 p.m.
The championship game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27.
Another northeast Nebraska Class C Area Tourney will be hosted by Crofton during the Area 1 senior bracket. #1 Creighton will open with #6 Hartington at 1 p.m.; followed by #3 Neligh vs. #4 Ponca at 4 p.m. and #2 Battle Creek vs. the host #5 Crofton at 7 p.m. on Friday.
The Class B Senior State Tournament will be hosted by Crete while Palmer will host the Class C Senior tourney. Senior State Tournament games will last from Saturday, July 31 – Wednesday, August 4 with a rain day set for Thursday, August 5.
