Wayne Tournament Teams Complete In Spencer Slugfest

SPENCER, IA – Youth baseball teams from Wayne continued their opening weekend tournament on Saturday.

From Spencer, Iowa, the Wayne Didget, Bronco and Pony tournament teams participated in the Spencer Slugfest on Friday and Saturday.

After opening Friday with a 6-5 loss to Sergeant Bluff, the Wayne Ponies won 15-0 over E-LC Midgets and suffered a 12-11 loss to the host Spencer. The Wayne Pony Tournament team finished 1-2 over the weekend.

In the victory over the E-LC Midgets, Austin Heiser recorded a homerun and two total RBI; Carter Wiese singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice; Gavin Anderson doubled and scored three runs as Blade Nelson doubled.

Mason Heikes singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice; Parker Patefield singled twice, drove in a run and scored; Sam Etter singled and scored; Herwin Bernal singled, drove in a run and scored; Brodrick Tiedtke singled and drove in two runs; Mason Karsky singled and scored twice as Brodey Munter and Drew Reinhardt both scored.

Tiedtke (49 pitches) picked up the victory in three scoreless innings striking out nine batters and walking two. Patefield (27) worked two scoreless innings striking out five batters.

During the loss to Spencer, Munter singled, recorded a homerun, drove in three total runs and scored twice; Heiser tripled and scored twice; Patefield doubled, drove in a run and scored twice as Wiese singled and doubled. Karksy singled and scored twice; Heikes singled and drove in a run as Etter and Reinhardt both scored.

A trio of pitchers were used in the loss as Gavin Anderson (52 pitches) worked three innings allowing four earned runs off four hits while striking out eight batters and walking two; Heikes pitched three innings allowing three runs off two hits while striking out six batters and walking one as Patefield came in for two innings allowing five runs (three earned) off three hits while striking out four batters and walking one.

The Wayne Broncos opened Friday with a 6-5 victory before going 1-2 on Saturday. The Wayne Broncos began Saturday with a 10-0 loss to the Lakers while winning 17-4 and then concluding with a 8-6 loss to start their tournament season at 2-2.

In the Saturday loss, Aiden Petersen recorded the lone hit being a single.

Easton Endicott (70 pitches) suffered the loss in two and two-thirds allowing 10 runs off seven hits while striking out three batters and walking five.

During the first Saturday win, Jackson McMenamin doubled, singled twice, drove in four runs and scored three times; Petersen singled three times, drove in two runs and scored a run as Blake Smith singled twice, drove in two runs and scored three times.

Maddux Heithold singled twice and drove in two runs; Colston Starzl singled and scored three times; Easton Endicott singled, drove in a run and scored twice; Carson Heiser singled; Reece Ames accounted for a RBI and run scored as Kash Haase and Evan Greve both scored twice.

Starzl (69 pitches) picked up the victory in three innings allowing four runs off five hits while striking out four batters and walking three.

From the final Saturday loss, Blake Smith doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored; McMenamin doubled, drove in two runs and scored as Petersen doubled and drove in a run. Haase singles and scored twice; Reece Ames singled as Starzl and Spencer Moormeier both scored.

Two pitchers were used in the loss being Ames (71 pitches) pitched two innings allowing seven runs (five earned) off two hits while striking out two batters and walking eight as McMenamin (27) worked three innings allowing one run off two hits while striking out four batters.

The Wayne Didgets dropped a 13-5 loss to the Badgers on Friday before moving into Saturday falling 13-2 to the A-A Warriors and 10-0 to the host Spencer. The Wayne Didget Tournament team is 0-3 on the season.

During the first Saturday loss, Sy Chase singled and drove in a run while Blake Heithold singled and scored. Benjamin Patefield and Harley Poland both singled; Mason Nelson accounted for a RBI as Brayden Wehrer scored.

Merrick Miller (100 pitches) suffered the loss in in two and a third allowing 13 runs (10 earned) off seven hits while striking out five batters and walking eight.

From the final Saturday loss, the Wayne Didgets were shutout and held to no hits.

Wehrer (70 pitches) suffered the loss in an inning and a third allowing 10 runs (eight earned) off five hits while striking out two batters and walking six. Heithold (4) allowed two hits.

Wayne youth baseball teams will return to Tri County League play this week. The Wayne Blue Didgets and Broncos are scheduled to visit Wakefield at 6/7:45 this evening and the Wayne White Didgets and Broncos are scheduled to host Logan View Gold at 6/7:45 tonight pending fielding conditions.

The Wayne Blue Ponies home game with Logan View from Sunday is being rescheduled as is the Wayne White Ponies road game at Schuyler due to field conditions. Wayne Blue is scheduled to next host Emerson-Hubbard on Wednesday, June 8 at 7 p.m. while Wayne White is scheduled to visit Tilden also on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Wood Bat Tournament for some of the youth baseball and legion teams is slated for Friday, June 10 – Sunday, June 12 in Wayne and Wakefield as the Wayne Pony Tournament team will also be in Sioux Falls June 10 – 12.
