WAYNE – With a few wrestling invitationals in the books for Wayne State College, the Wildcats are off to their best start in program history.

According to a release from coach Greg Vander Weil, Wayne State College has offered wrestling for the past 15 years within the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA).

A total of 20 wrestlers are registered with the NCWA as the group has found great success so far this season.

Most recently, the Wayne State College wrestling program competed in the Doane University Open on December 3.

The top Wildcat wrestling results came from sophomore Clayton Harris (149) from David City; freshman Dakota Spann (197) from Wayne and sophomore Dylan Zoucha (174) from Malcolm all finishing with 3-2 records on the day.

Wayne native Spann finished fifth in a 16-man bracket and while Zoucha and Harris both placed  seventh in a 32-man bracket.

Freshman Gavin Zoucha (165) from Malcolm finished with a 2-2 record on the day.

As a team, Wayne State College placed 14th with 34 points out of 27 teams.

Wayne State club wrestling saw NCAA Division I, II and NAIA teams at the Doane Open. The NCWA Wildcat team competed against top-tier wrestlers in the tournament which is a testimony of the top quality young men wrestling in the Black and Gold of Wayne State College.

Other wrestlers in action were Tyler Kelly, Colby Puck, Mo Siidow and Chase Eggleston.

The Wayne State College wrestling program will next compete in the Buena Vista Invite on Saturday, December 10 in Storm Lake, Iowa starting at 10 a.m.
