Wayne State Wrestling Qualifies Five For National Tournament

WAYNE – A handful of individuals from the Wayne State College club wrestling team will be making their way south during the NCWA National Wrestling tournament.

The National Collegiate Wrestling Association will host the tournament in Allen, Texas Thursday, March 14 – Saturday, March 16.

WSC competed in the Southwest Conference national qualifying tournament on March 2 from Richland College in Dallas, Texas. As a team, Wayne State placed fourth.

Leading the team with a runner-up finish was junior Gerald Kenkel (174) of Ogallala, followed by a trio of third place finishers from freshman Julio Sanchez (197) of Wakefield as well as juniors Hunter Weiss (149) of Beatrice and Ethan Fitzler (157) of Papillion La-Vista. Rounding out the National Qualifiers was senior captain Matthew Reeves (141) of Battle Creek placing fourth.

The team is wrapping up season 11 and finished 10th in the NCWA national dual tournament held January 25-26 in Mesquite Nevada, earning 11 points toward the team title to be decided this week in Allen, Texas.
