WAYNE – After playing in a tie and road victory in early October, the Wayne State College women’s soccer team took a pair of positive results during a home weekend series.
From the WSC Soccer Complex Wayne State entertained Winona State University Sunday late afternoon after topping Upper Iowa 1-0 Friday.
WSC took the early lead thanks to a Madison Kemp goal in the 23rd minute (22:44) which resulted in the only first half goal. In the second half, the Warriors knotted it up in the 63rd minute at 1-1. But, just over a minute later, Carleigh Wilson netted the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute (63:14) to win 2-1.
The ‘Cats have now won three straight to now sit 5-3-3 (5-2-1 NSIC) while Winona State fell to 4-7 (3-5 NSIC).
Wilson placed two of her three shots on goal including one score while Kemp added one of two shot attempts with one scoring for WSC. Rylie Wehner placed one of six on goal while Brook Worrel added one of three on goal. Emily Kilby, Gabi Rosa and Tori Solley all attempted a shot.
Rachel Grisham allowed one goal and recorded five saves in 90 minutes.
Wayne State won the shot attempt battle 17-12 and corner kicks (10-4) but it was the Warriors holding a one-shot edge on goal (6-5).
The Wayne State College women’s soccer team will next host MSU Moorhead on Friday, October 18 at 3 p.m. and Northern State on Sunday, October 20 at 1 p.m.
