Wayne State Women Use Dominate Third Quarter In Home Victory, Augie Men Take Control Of Offensive Glass

WAYNE – The 22-game NSIC schedule began Saturday evening for the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams.

From Rice Auditorium, WSC entertained Augustana University during their first of two meetings in a month as travel partners.

In the women’s contest Wayne State nearly doubled their halftime score (32-32) with a 31-23 third quarter. Augie did outscore WSC in the fourth (21-17) but Wayne State College won 80-76 to improve to 5-1 (1-0 NSIC) snapping a four-game losing streak to the Vikings and winning their fourth straight this season. Augie fell to 4-1 (0-1 NSIC).

Kylie Hammer posted a career-high 21 points (7-13 FG/4-6 3PT/3-3 FT) off the bench with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Brittany Bongartz recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds (two blocks), while Erin Norling fouled out with 12 points (three assists/two blocks) and Halley Busse scored 12 points.

Other leaders came from Haley Vesey with 11 points (seven in third quarter); Josey Ryan with eight points, eight rebounds and four assists; Autumn Mlinar with three points and Awoti Akoi scored one point.

The ‘Cats finished 25-59 (42.4%) from the floor, 8-20 (40%) from the three-point line and 22-29 (75.9%) from the foul line.

Augustana leaders were Vishe Rabb with 17 points, Abby Hora scored 12 points and Lauren Sees with 10 points.

Augustana shot 32-74 (43.2%) from the field, 6-27 (22.2%) from behind the arc and 6-14 (42.9%) from the charity stripe.


During the men’s game, WSC was holding to a 35-33 lead at the break but Augustana jumped ahead early in the second half. Augie outscored the Wildcats 42-31 to win 75-66. The Vikings improve to 6-1 (1-0 NSIC) while Wayne State fell to 3-6 (0-1 NSIC).

The Wildcat men were led by Jordan Janssen with 14 points and nine rebounds (5-14 FG/4-7 FT) to go along with three assists and two blocks. Other double figure scorers came from Nick Ferrarini with 13 points (4-9 FG/1-4 3PT/1-4 FT) and Al’Tavius Jackson adding 10 points (3-10 FG/0-2 3PT/4-5 FT). Ferrarini tallied a team-high three blocks; Jackson had four steals as Nate Mohr and Henry Penner both tacked on four assists.

Other scoring came from Nate Mohr with nine points; Nate Thayer (seven); Penner (six); Ben Dentlinger (five) and Tramarcus Levi (two).

WSC finished 23-57 (40.4%) from the field, 4-18 (22.2%) from behind the arc and 16-23 (69.6%) from the foul line.

Four Vikings hit double figures led by the double-double performers from Tyler Riemersma with 20 points and 16 rebounds as well as Michael Schaefer with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Adam Dykman tallied 15 points and Matt Todd scored 14 points.

Augustana outrebounded the ‘Cats 25-7 on the offensive glass (33-4 second chance points).

The Vikings shot 25-73 (34.2%) from the floor, 3-19 (15.8%) from the three-point line and 22-32 (68.8%) from the charity stripe.

The Wayne State College women and men will next host Upper Iowa on Friday, December 6 at 5:30/7:30 p.m.
