Wayne State Women Tabbed 11th In Preseason Rankings, Two Underclassmen Selected As Athletes To Watch

WAYNE – Last Friday the 2019 NSIC Women’s Indoor Track and Field Preseason Coaches’ Poll was released.

Announced by the league office in Burnsville, Minnesota, the Wayne State women were tabbed 11th with 80 points.

University of Mary was voted the team to beat in NSIC women’s indoor track and field this season, collecting 192 points and 10 first-place votes from league coaches. Minnesota State was second at 187 points and the remaining five first-place votes. Augustana (167), Winona State (152) and Minnesota Duluth (145) closed out the top five teams.

Sioux Falls was voted sixth with 132 points followed by Northern State (106), Concordia-St. Paul (98), MSU Moorhead (89) and St. Cloud State (85) rounding out the top 10.

Sophomore thrower Jadin Wagner and freshman sprinter Jordyn Pester were selected as the Athletes to Watch this season for the ‘Cats.

Wagner, a sophomore from Lawton, Iowa (Lawton-Bronson HS), was voted the Wildcat Field Athlete to Watch this season. As a freshman last year, she finished fourth in the shot put at the NSIC Indoor Championships with an NCAA provisional mark of 44′ 7 ½” and was an NCAA outdoor national qualifier in the shot put

Pester, a freshman from Charter Oak, Iowa (MVAOCOU HS), is listed as Wayne State’s Track Athlete to Watch this season. As a senior in high school last spring, she won the Iowa Class 2A state titles in the 200 and 400-meter dashes to go with running a leg on the state championship spring medley relay team.

The Wayne State women competed in the South Dakota State Holiday Open last Thursday. WSC will next compete in the Doan Invite in Crete, Nebraska on Saturday, January 12.

Mckenzie Scheil was also named the Northern Sun Conference Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday afternoon by the league office in Burnsville, Minnesota following her performance in last weekend’s South Dakota State Holiday Open.

A redshirt freshman from Fairmont (Fillmore Central HS), Scheil reached an NCAA provisional mark in the weight throw recording a top mark of 58′ 3 to place seventh overall amongst a strong field of Division I throwers in her first collegiate meet. Her mark currently ranks fifth in NCAA Division II.
