Wayne State Women Pull Away From Kearney In Second Half, Record 127th Home Victory In 10th Year At Rice

WAYNE – Following a season opening win for the Wayne State College women’s basketball team, WSC was back at home to close out the NSIC/MIAA Crossover Saturday evening.

From Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, it was an in-state showdown between Nebraska-Kearney and the ‘Cats.

Following a first quarter which favored WSC, 16-12, the second quarter went to the Lopers of 15-12. At the half, WSC held a one-point lead at 28-27. The ‘Cats then pulled away in the second half with scores of 20-14 in the third and 21-11 in the fourth. Final found the Wildcats winning 69-52 to improve to 2-0 on the season as UNK fell to 0-2.

Wayne State is now 127-13 in games played at Rice Auditorium over the past 10 years.

Halley Busse tallied a team-high in points with 17 and assists with six while adding six rebounds as Andrea Larson and Maggie Lowe both picked up 11 points. Erin Norling was the leader in the rebound department with nine boards as she added nine points. Taylor Wangerin also picked up six rebounds as Wangerin and Norling both tacked on two blocks. Lowe and Busse recorded four steals each.

WSC went 18-49 (36.7%) from the floor, 5-16 (31.3%) from behind the arc and 28-33 (84.4%) from the charity stripe.

UNK’s top scorers were Maegan Holt with nine points and five rebounds while Brook Carlson added seven points.

The Lopers shot 18-53 (34%) from the field, 8-28 (28.6%) from the three-point line and 8-14 (57.1%) at the free throw line.

To open the second day, Minnesota Crookston of the NSIC picked up their second win over an MIAA team of Northwest Missouri State, 79-71.

The Wayne State College women’s basketball team will next open their road schedule in Quincy, Illinois during the Subway Tip-Off Classic. WSC will face Truman State at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 16 while competing with the host, Quincy University on Saturday, November 17 at 3 p.m.
