Wayne State Women End Season With Home Loss To Augie

WAYNE – A 16-game season came to an end for the Wayne State College Wildcat women’s basketball team as WSC welcomed in NSIC South Division leader Augustana.

Back at Rice Auditorium Saturday late afternoon, the Vikings secured the number one seed in the South Division thanks to an 87-76 victory over the ‘Cats.

Augustana took the early advantage thanks to a 31-15 opening quarter while WSC answered with a 21-16 second. The Vikings led 47-36 at the break before both teams were even in the second half totaling 40 points each. Augie improved to 11-4 overall (10-3 NSIC) while the ‘Cats ended the year 6-10 (5-9 NSIC).

Seniors Erin Norling (7-15 FG/3-8 3PT/1-3 FT) and Halley Busse (4-9 FG/2-6 3PT/8-9 FT) both finished with a team-high 18 points. Sophomore Josey Ryan (3-4 FG/2-2 3PT/2-2 FT) added 10 points.

Other scoring came from junior Amelia Ivester with eight points, junior Kyle Hammer scored seven points and recorded five steals, junior Autumn Mlinar finished with four points, sophomores Kassidy Pingel and Lauren Zacharias both scored three points, senior Brittany Bongartz and redshirt junior Selena Shady tallied two points as freshman Ella Skinner totaled a point.

WSC shot 25-55 (45.5%) from the field, 9-22 (40.9%) from behind the arc and 17-22 (77.3%) from the foul line.

Augie leaders were Aislinn Duffy with 22 points, Izzy Van Veldhuizen scored 16 points while Hannah Mitby and Vishe’ Rabb added 15 points each.

Augie finished 34-65 (52.3%) from the field, 11-25 (40%) from the three-point line and 8-11 (72.7%) from the charity stripe.

The Wayne State College women recognized five individuals being seniors Erin Norling, Halley Busse and Brittany Bongartz as well as redshirt junior Selena Shady and junior Amelia Ivester during the final home game.
