WAYNE – Selection Monday was held on NCAA.com where the Wayne State College volleyball program just missed out on the top eight in the Central Region Tournament.
The 2021 NCAA Central Region host will be Central Missouri on December 2-4.
Central Missouri won the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), Arkansas Tech won the Great American Conference as St. Cloud State won the NSIC Tournament as automatic qualifiers. At-large representatives will be Northwest Missouri State (MIAA), Winona State (NSIC), Washburn (MIAA), Nebraska-Kearney (MIAA) and Concordia-St. Paul (NSIC).
Matches include #1 Central Missouri vs. #8 Arkansas Tech; #4 Winona State vs. #5 Washburn; #2 St. Cloud State vs. #7 Concordia-St. Paul and #3 Northwest Missouri State vs. #6 Nebraska-Kearney.
The championship quarterfinals, semifinals and final match will take place Thursday-Saturday, December 9-11, at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center in Tampa, Florida.
The Wayne State College volleyball team also moved up one spot to 14th in the final regular season AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released Monday afternoon. The Wildcats received 479 points in voting conducted by various Division II coaches from across the nation.
The Wildcats finished the regular season at 22-8 and advanced to the semi-finals of the NSIC Volleyball Tournament last weekend in Sioux Falls before falling in five sets to then #11 St. Cloud State.
Other NSIC teams rated inside the top 10 include #7 St. Cloud State (27-4/one first place vote) moved up four spots; #10 Winona State (28-4) fell two spots; #15 Concordia-St. Paul (22-8) fell two spots and #17 Southwest Minnesota State (21-8) fell one spot as Upper Iowa (8 votes) and Augustana (4 votes) were receiving votes and listed on two or more ballots.
MIAA ranked teams are #1 Central Missouri (28-3/18 first place votes) up two spots; #4 Northwest Missouri State (26-5) remained the same; #6 Washburn (26-5) down a spot and #12 Nebraska-Kearney (25-6) remained the same
#25 Oklahoma Baptist (23-4) of the GAC fell two spots as Arkansas Tech (22-7/33) was receiving votes and listed on two or more ballots.
