BROOKINGS, SD – As the NSIC Indoor Championships are slated for this weekend, several members with the Wayne State College women’s and men’s track & field team recently competed in a weekend invitational.
From the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, South Dakota, WSC took part in the SDSU Last Chance Invite on Saturday, February 20.
The Wildcat women placed seventh with 27 points.
South Dakota took first with 171 points followed by Augustana (134.5), South Dakota State (126), Northern State (45.5) as Nebraska Omaha (28.5) and Sioux Falls (28.5) tied for fifth. Wayne State was seventh with 27 points followed by Southwest Minnesota State (11) and Concordia-St. Paul (4).
Mckenzie Scheil took third in the weight throw (59’ 8 ½”) and fourth in the shot put at 45’ 3 ½”. Kenzie Sullivan took fifth in the shot put (44’ 6 ¼”) while Jadin Wagner was fifth in the weight throw (58’ 1 ¾”).
The Wildcat 4 x 400-meter relay team of Sarah Cotton, Brianna Crouch, Sophie Noecker and Marin Jetensky took second in 4:16.97 to close out Wildcat scoring.
Brock Hegarty and Cade Kalkowski had the top finishes for the Wayne State men’s indoor track and field team as WSC finished fifth as a team with 46.5 points.
South Dakota scored 184.5 points for the top spot followed by South Dakota State with 129. Augustana (85), Northern State (81) and Wayne State (46.5) closed out the top five teams. Other team scoring had Sioux Falls with 24.5, Drake 16, Southwest Minnesota State 13.5 and Concordia-St. Paul 7.
Hegarty placed second in the 1,000-meter run at 2:32.94. Bryce Holcomb came in third in the 600-meter run (1:24.82) while Cade Kalkowski was third in the weight throw at 67’ ¾”.
Gabe Peitz was third in the 1,000-meter run (2:42.12) and Dylan Kneifl tied for third in the high jump clearing 6’ 6 ¾” while Mikhail Sands took fourth in the long jump (22’ 1 ¾”).
Other scorers for the Wildcats were Ben Allen sixth in the shot put (51’ 10 ½”), Cole Christoffersen seventh in the weight throw (61’ 4 ¼”), Cody Crosley seventh in the long jump (21’ 4”), Noah Carr eighth in the 200-meter dash (22.68) and Collin Kotz eighth in the 3,000-meter run (9:34.17).
The Wayne State College women’s and men’s indoor track & field team will compete in the NSIC Indoor Championships in Mankato, Minnesota on Thursday, February 25 – Saturday, February 27.
