Wayne State Men Begin Season 0-1, Close NSIC/GAC Challenge With Second Home Game

WAYNE – A home opener weekend of Wayne State College men’s basketball took over Friday evening.

From Rice Auditorium in Wayne, the Wildcat men began the night by hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State during the NSIC/GAC Challenge.

Southeastern Oklahoma State picked up the 91-78 road victory at Wayne State College to begin their season at 1-0. WSC fell to 0-1.

Southeastern Oklahoma State outscored the Wildcats, 41-36 at the break before also outscoring Wayne State College, 50-42 in the second half. Final favored Southeastern Oklahoma State over Wayne State, 91-78.

A trio of double figures led Wayne State on the court being Justin Eagins (7-13 FG/4-7 3PT/3-3 FT) with 21 points, four rebounds and an assist; Jordan Janssen (9-18 FG/2-4 FT) added 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists and one block as Nick Ferrarini (6-7 FG/4-4 3PT/2-2 FT) finished with 18 points and three rebounds.

Other scoring came from Cody McCullough with eight points, nine rebounds, one assist, one steal and a block; Nate Mohr tallied seven points and a rebound as Jay Saunders (three boards/three steals/assist) and Noah Erickson (one rebound) both had two points. David Harmon (two assists) and Sean Stokes (assist/steal) both had a rebound.

Wayne State College shot 31-73 (42.5%) from the floor, 9-23 (39.1%) from the three-point line and 7-9 (77.8%) from the foul line.

Southeastern Oklahoma State had five players in double figures. They were led by Brennen Burns (11-18 FG/0-3 3PT/5-6 FT) with 27 points, five rebounds, five assists and a steal; Jett Sternbrerger (6-12 FG/1-5 3PT/12-12 FT) added 25 points, two rebounds and two assists; Kyle Leslie (5-11 FG/3-5 3PT) had 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double; Robert Briley (6-7 FG) tallied 12 points, five rebounds and two steals as Kody Clouet (4-7 FG/2-3 3PT) tacked on 10 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and an assist.

Southeastern Oklahoma State finished 33-59 (55.9%) from the field, 6-17 (35.3%) from behind the arc and 19-20 (95%) at the charity stripe.

The Wayne State College men will next host Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. on Saturday. with MSU Moorhead taking on Southeastern Oklahoma State at 4 p.m. from Rice Auditorium.

Later Friday evening, MSU Moorhead won 76-67 over Oklahoma Baptist.
