Wayne State Club Wrestling Program To Send 13 Onto National Tournament

WAYNE – It’s been a busy season for the Wayne State College wrestling team with a recent weekend outing allowing for 13 individuals to punch their ticket to nationals.

According to a release from Coach Greg Vander Weil, the team from Wayne State College with an enrollment of 3,800 students finished second to Texas A&M with an enrollment of 76,000 students. “So, little old WSC from Nebraska can wrestle with the big schools of Texas.”

Texas A&M edged Wayne State College in the team standings, 115 – 107 in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Southwest Conference National Qualifying Tournament in Arlington, Texas this past weekend.

Other team results from the NCWA Southwest Conference National Qualifying Tournament went to University of North Texas in third (36.5), University of Texas at Austin placed fourth (25), Texas State University came in fifth (13), University of Texas at Arlington finished sixth (11.5) as University of Houston – Downtown rounded out the seven teams (5).

Individual Wildcats claiming Southwest Conference titles were Clayton Harris of David City (157), Dylan Zoucha of Malcolm (174) and Jared Atkeson of O’Neill (184).

Conference runner-up finishers went to Tyler Kelly of Omaha (125), Ryan Zoucha of Malcolm (133), Lane Barton of Meridian (149), Matt Thompson of Texas (165), Isaac Voboril of Milford (174), Corey Dawe of Burwell (184) and Angel Rojo of Schuyler (285). Other national qualifiers included a third place finish by Mohamed Siidow of South Sioux City (141) as well as fourth place results by Jordan Jensen of LeMars, Iowa (157) and Marcos Osorio of West Point (149).

Wayne State College club wrestling officials will expect a very strong showing at Nationals with a young team. Coaches state the team looks great due to a strong season of hard work, dedication and team pride.

National qualifiers will work on a few technique areas, but overall are ready to go compete in the largest College National Tournament.

The 2022 National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Tournament will be in Allen, Texas from Thursday, March 10 – Saturday, March 12.
