Wayne State Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader At UMD

DULUTH, MN – With an upcoming road trip to Bismarck, North Dakota in mid-April approaching, the Wayne State College baseball team visited the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth.

From Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minnesota, WSC took part in a Saturday doubleheader with UMD.

Wayne State College dominated game one, 12-3 but suffered a 10-9 loss in the night-cap. With the split, WSC is now 7-11 (6-8 NSIC) while UMD is 6-15 (4-13 NSIC).

During the first game, WSC outscored the Bulldogs, 5-3 in the opening inning before pouring in a single run in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to lead 11-3. The ‘Cats tacked on one more run in the sixth to win 12-3.

Brice Bisenius recorded three singles, a double, four RBI and two runs scored while Peyton Barnes finished with a solo homerun, two singles, two runs scored and two RBI for WSC. Andrew Hanson singled three times and scored three times as CJ Neumann singled twice, doubled, drove in three runs and scored twice.

Eric Standish singled and scored twice, Conner Fiene singled and drove in a run; Noah Roberts singled and scored as Kaleb Holm accounted for a RBI.

Aiden Breedlove (1-2) picked up the win in five innings allowing three earned runs off six hits while striking out three batters and walking two. Keean Allen worked the final two innings allowing one hit while striking out three batters.

During the second game, Minnesota Duluth did early damage with a seven-run first before both teams scored a run in the second. WSC began their comeback with two runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to tie the game up at 8-8. UMD brought in two runs in the eighth while the ‘Cats could only bring in one run in the top of the ninth falling 10-9.

Bisenius had two swings which led to a solo homerun and a three-run homer while Noah Roberts singled three times and scored three times for WSC. CJ Neumann singled, doubled and drove in a run; Barnes singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice; Fiene singled twice and drove in two runs; Brendan Madsen and Hanson both singled twice and scored as Standish singled twice.

Andrew Staebell (0-2) suffered the loss in an inning and a third allowing two earned runs off two hits while striking out one batter and walking two. Hunter Wienhoff started the opening three innings allowing eight earned runs off 11 hits while striking out three batters. Logan Walters worked three innings allowing two hits while striking out two batters and walking one. Lawson Zenner pitched two-thirds of an inning striking out and walking one batter each.

The Wayne State College baseball team will close out the three-game series with a nine-inning game Sunday at noon with Minnesota Duluth.
