Wayne State Baseball Bounces Back In Second Game After Allowing 21 Runs

WICHITA, KS – After starting their season 0-4 in Colorado, the Wayne State College baseball team headed south to Kansas to play four games against Newman on Saturday and Sunday while adding a double header at Pittsburg State later in the week.

To open the four-game series from McCarthy Field in Wichita, Kansas the Wildcat baseball team jumped out front with two runs in the opening inning and another run in the second. But, that was all the scoring for WSC as Newman University posted a six-run second inning and a seven-run third inning to lead 13-3. Newman then finished the game off with three more runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and one more run in the sixth to win 21-3.

Seven different Wildcats recorded one hit as sophomore Jake Lemar posted a solo home run and freshman Andrew Hanson tacked on a double. Senior Tanner Simons and senior Rob Ramsey each drove in a run with a single.

Sophomore Aiden Breedlove suffered the loss (0-1) in two innings of work allowing six earned runs off of four hits while striking out and walking four batters each. Sophomore Hunter Wienhoff saw four batters allowing four earned runs off of one hit while walking two. Senior Brady Johnson worked an inning allowing three runs (two earned) off of one hit while walking two batters. Redshirt freshman Cedric Moreno pitched two innings allowing seven runs (four earned) off of five hits while striking out three batters and walking two. Freshman Max Ploof recorded an inning of work allowing an earned run off of two hits while striking out two batters.

During the second game on Saturday, it was a low scoring early game as WSC struck first with a run in the second inning before both teams scored two runs in the fourth. The Wildcats then took control late in the game with a four-run fifth inning, two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to secure their first win of the season, 12-2. WSC improved to 1-5 as Newman fell to 4-8.

WSC bounced back in the second game with five different players recording multi-hit games as sophomore Bryce Bisenius doubled, singled three times and drove in two runs. Senior David Janes (RBI), junior Kyle Thompson (two RBI), junior Travis Miller (3B/2 RBI) and Simons (HR/3 RBI) all added multi-hits.

Freshman Aaron Ras was the leader on the hill picking up his first Wildcat win (1-1) in five innings of work allowing two earned runs off of four hits while striking out five batters and walking two. Sophomore Isaac Rubendall pitched two innings allowing a hit and walking two batters.

The Wildcat baseball team will close out their four-game series with Newman Sunday afternoon at Noon and 2 p.m.
