Wayne Softball Uses Single Runs In Odd Numbered Innings To Hold Off O’Neill

WAYNE – It has been another solid start to the season for the defending Class B state champion Wayne High softball team. After the Blue Devils dropped their season opener to Class B Blair, WHS has rattled off four straight wins against Class C competition.

From the Summer Sports Complex, the Blue Devils welcomed in O’Neill.

WHS scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings while the Eagles lone run came in the sixth. Final favored Wayne High winning 3-1. The Blue Devils are now 4-1 on the season while O’Neill fell to 0-5.

Mikaela McManigal singled twice while Hope O’Reilly singled, drove in a run and scored for Wayne. Kendall Dorey and Virginia Kniesche both singled as Taytum Sweetland and Brooklyn Kruse each crossed the plate once. Logan Miller also accounted for a RBI.

Dorey picked up the complete game win in seven innings allowing an earned run off one hit while striking out 14 batters and walking three.

The Wayne High softball team will get their first taste of road competition next week when they compete in the Highway 91 Triangular while also facing Bishop Neumann on Tuesday, September 1 starting at 4:30 p.m. Another road outing next week will feature a game at South Sioux City at 6:30 p.m. for the varsity team.
