Wayne Seniors Begin Area Tournament With Nine-Inning Victory

PIERCE – Wayne Post 43 Seniors were back in the saddle Friday evening competing against a familiar Ralph Bishop League opponent in this weekend’s Area Tournament.

From Pierce, the Class B Area 5 Senior American Legion baseball tourney began on Friday.

#7 Wayne Post 43 Seniors used a run in the top of the ninth to defeat #2 West Point, 3-2.

Neither team scored the opening four innings until the Wayne Seniors brought two runs across the plate in the top of the fifth. West Point then answered with two runs in the home half of the sixth. Again, no scoring in the seventh and eighth while Wayne scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth to win 3-2.

The Wayne Post 43 Seniors improved to 6-10 on the season.

Devin Anderson doubled and drove in a run while Gavin Redden singled, drove in a run and scored. Toby Braun singled and scored twice; Wyatt Heikes singled as James Dorcey accounted for a RBI.

Dorcey (35) worked the final three innings and was credited with the win striking out three batters. Redden (99) started the opening six innings allowing two earned runs off five hits while striking out eight batters and walking two.

Earlier in the day on Friday, #3 O’Neill won 10-2 against #6 Stanton, while the night cap favored #5 Pierce over #4 Albion, 12-11.

Day two games on Saturday will begin with an elimination game between #6 Stanton vs. #2 West Point at 2 p.m. followed by a pair of 1-0 teams of #3 O’Neill vs. #7 Wayne at 4:30 p.m. and #1 Columbus Lakeview (received a first round bye) vs. 1-0 #5 Pierce at 7 p.m.

#4 Albion earned a bye in the loser’s bracket into Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

The 2022 Class B Senior Legion State Tournament will be hosted by Broken Bow from Saturday, July 30 – Wednesday, August 3.
