Wayne Run Rules Wakefield Juniors, Wakefield/Wayne Seniors Win Over Pierce

WAKEFIELD – A pair of junior and senior American Legion baseball teams opened the weekend with a northeast Nebraska showdown.

From Eaton Field Monday night, Wayne Post 43 visited the Wakefield Post 81 Jrs while the Wakefield/Wayne Post 81 Srs hosted Pierce Post 72.

In the Juniors game, Post 43 opened with a four-run first inning. Wayne then tallied three runs each in the third and fourth while closing out the game with a seven-run fifth to win 17-0. Wayne is now 13-4 while Wakefield fell to 4-6.

Brooks Kneifl singled, doubled and drove in four runs while three hit performances came from Blake Bartos (one being a double) and Brock Hopkins who also drove in a run for Wayne. Reid Korth singled, doubled and drove in a run; Gunnar Jorgensen singled twice and drove in two runs; Max Miller singled and drove in two runs; Tyrus Eischeid singled and drove in a run as Brandon Bartos accounted for a RBI.

Brooks Kneifl picked up the win in three and two-thirds allowing three hits while striking out seven batters and walking one. Korth worked the final inning and a third striking out two batters and walking one.

For Wakefield, Blake Brown; Jakobe Mahan and Lukas Oswald all singled. Mahan suffered the loss in four innings.

During the seniors game, Wakefield/Wayne took a 2-1 lead after the first then never looked back after scoring three runs in the second and one more run in the third to go up 6-1. Pierce tacked on one more run in the fourth while Post 81 answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth to win 8-2. Wakefield/Wayne improves to 10-4 overall (6-1 RBL) while Pierce fell to 8-5.

Hagan Miller singled twice and drove in two runs while Julio Sanchez singled and drove in two runs for Wakefield/Wayne. Nolan Belt, Esgar Godinez and Joe Janssen all singled.

Trevor DeBoer picked up the win in five innings allowing two runs off six hits while striking out 11 batters and walking one. Godinez worked the final two innings allowing one hit while striking out four batters.

The Wayne Post 43 Juniors will next visit Laurel on Wednesday, June 26 at 7 p.m. For Post 81, the Wakefield Juniors and Wakefield/Wayne Seniors will visit Pender at 5:45/8 p.m. Wednesday.
