WAYNE – A pair of northeast Nebraska Junior American Legion baseball programs went to work for a mid-week Ralph Bishop League outing.
From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, the Post 43 Juniors welcomed in the Wakefield Post 81 Juniors on Wednesday.
Wakefield used a three-run top of the seventh inning to force extras but it was the host Post 43 Wayne Juniors using a walk-off error to win 5-4 in nine innings. The Wayne Juniors remained undefeated at 6-0 while Wakefield falls to 3-4 overall.
Wyatt Heikes drove in the winning run off an error while also singling twice and scoring a run while Aiden Liston singled twice and drove in a run for Wayne. Alex Rodriguez and Calvin Ankeny both singled, drove in a run and scored; Kaleb Moormeier singled and drove in a run; Devin Anderson singled and scored; Zach McManigal singled as Ryan Karsky scored.
Liston (50 pitches) picked up the win in three and two-thirds allowing three earned runs off six hits while striking out six batters. Heikes (78) started the opening five and third allowing an earned run off two hits while striking out nine batters and walking two.
Cade Johnson singled, tripled and scored; Eliseo Sarmiento doubled, drove in a run and scored while Johnathan Birkley doubled for Wakefield. Jesse Lundahl and Ryan Anderson both singled and scored; Tim Kaufman and Taytem Salmon both singled as Jack Schlickbernd accounted for a RBI.
Kaufman (34 pitches) suffered the loss in three innings allowing one run while striking out three batters. Lundahl (81) started the opening five innings allowing four earned runs off nine hits while striking out seven batters and walking one.

The Wayne Post 43 Seniors (2-4) were off Wednesday and next join their Juniors team in RBL play hosting Crofton on Monday, June 13 at 5:30/8 p.m. Wayne also had their Monday, June 6 home doubleheader with Pierce rescheduled to next Tuesday, June 14 at 5:30/8 p.m. The next league game for the Wakefield Post 81 Juniors will also be next Monday hosting Hartington at 7 p.m.
Both Wayne and Wakefield teams will be competing in the Max “Bud” Greve Wood Bat Tournament this weekend.
Wayne Juniors will compete in Pool B against Creighton on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Lennox at 8 p.m. later in the evening while the Post 43 Seniors will be in Pool B and open on Saturday with Wahoo at noon and then host Beresford at 6 p.m. that evening. The Wayne Seniors will close out pool play at 2 p.m. against Arlington on Sunday. All Wayne pool play games will be at Hank Overin Field.
For the Wakefield Juniors, Post 81 will open Pool A with Sutton at 8 p.m. on Friday and face the Lincoln Blackhawks at 8 p.m. on Saturday all at Eaton Field in Wakefield.
