Wayne Post 43 Juniors Survive Four-Run Fifth Inning Over Wahoo

WAHOO – After getting knocked out of the winner’s bracket on their first game of the 2018 Class B Area 5 Junior American Legion baseball tournament, Wayne 43 fought off elimination Sunday afternoon.

From Sam Crawford Field in Wahoo, the top seed in tourney play took on the host, #6 Wahoo. Wahoo lost on Friday to Lakeview and won against Lincoln Christian Saturday.

Wayne started scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to lead 3-0. Wahoo then outscored Post 43, 4-2 in the fifth before Wayne answered back with a 2-1 sixth inning and held on for the 7-5 win. Wayne Post 43 snapped a two-game losing streak and are now 16-4 on the season.

Trevor DeBoer paced Wayne at the plate with a single and double as Reid Korth doubled and drove in a run. Josh Lutt and Jacob Kneifl both singled and added a RBI as Blake Bartos singled and drove in two runs.

Kneifl picked up the win in six innings allowing five runs (three earned) off of five hits while striking out five batters and walking two. Victor Kniesche accounted for the save in an inning striking out one batter.

Wayne will fight off another elimination game on Monday, July 9 in Wahoo at 4 p.m. Join Sports Director, Aaron Scheffler on Big Red Country 104.9 and online at waynedailynews.com with pregame coverage set for around 3:45 p.m as Wayne will face #3 Columbus Lakeview. Wayne defeated Lakeview earlier in the season 1-0 on June 13.

The evening game will feature 2-1 Valparaiso vs. 3-0 Lincoln Lutheran at 7 p.m.

Monday schedule: Neligh-Oakdale vs. Hartington at 7 p.m. (winner plays Creighton at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday for the championship game)

 

Class C2 in Pender:

#1 Pender eliminated #5 Ponca, 9-2

#2 Logan View eliminated #3 North Bend, 11-4

Monday schedule: #4 Tekamah-Herman vs. Pender at 7:30 p.m. (winner gets Logan View at 5 p.m. on Tuesday for the championship game)
