WAYNE – Following a perfect record in league play, the Wayne Post 43 Junior American Legion baseball team began their league tournament over the weekend.

From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, Post 43 earned the #1 seed in the North Division of the Ralph Bishop League Tournament.

Wayne (17-0) shutout #8 Crofton, 8-0 on Saturday.

Devin Anderson singled, doubled, drove in three runs and scored twice as Wyatt Heikes tripled and scored.

Kaleb Moormeier singled twice and drove in a run; Gavin Redden singled, drove in a run and scored twice; Jase Dean singled; Aiden Liston accounted for a RBI as Kaden Keller scored three runs.

Redden (74) picked up the complete game victory in six scoreless innings allowing five hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

The other game in Wayne favored #4 Pierce over #5 Ponca, 7-3.

The Wayne Post 43 Juniors will next face #4 Pierce at 8 p.m. in Wayne on Monday, June 27.

In Battle Creek, #2 Battle Creek defeated #7 South Sioux City, 2-1 while #3 Wakefield won 2-0 over #6 Hartington. Battle Creek and Wakefield will play the first game in Wayne at 5:30 p.m. today (Monday).

The Wakefield Post 81 Juniors contest featured a pithing duel with the Hartington Juniors.

Both Wakefield runs were scored in the fifth inning when Taytem Salmon bunted Ryan Anderson over to third base who then scored on a throwing error from the Hartington pitcher. Following a passed-ball, Salmon advanced to third base who also scored off a Jack Schlickbernd suicide squeeze.

After getting out of a jam in the first inning with runners on the corners and one out (Eliseo Sarmiento caught a line-drive and doubled up the runner at third), Jesse Lundahl retired the next 18 of 20 batters faced. He finished with a complete game shutout victory in 79 pitches striking out 10 Hartington batters.

Hartington’s pitcher, Doyle Taylor also had a solid day on the mound not allowing a hit striking out 10 Wakefield batters in five innings.


South Division Junior scores:

Pender: #2 Pender defeated #7 Hooper-Scribner, 9-1; #3 West Point defeated #6 Tekamah-Herman, 13-5 and #5 Columbus Lakeview defeated #4 Oakland-Craig, 11-2. #1 Arlington earned a first round bye into June 27 and will face Lakeview at 8 p.m. in Arlington as Pender and West Point will play the first game in Arlington at 5:30 p.m. today (Monday.
