WAYNE/LAUREL – A pair of northeast Nebraska high school girls golf teams will begin their season in week on the same course.
For Wayne High, they’ll be under 13th year head girls golf coach Josh Johnson while the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge girls golf team will be led by coach Christina Patefield in her seventh year.
Coach Johnson said the Blue Devils had a busy summer.
“We also did three summer camps,” said coach Johnson. “What we did, is we traveled to Beemer one week, we hosted one week and then we went to Laurel one week and had a summer triangular to kind of get the girls out.”
WHS will have six high schoolers with a couple more planning to join along with a handful of junior high girls looking to help as manager and learn more about the game.
Wayne High did lose a couple of seniors last year including a state qualifier.
Coach Patefield added the Bears will be focusing on their short-game early on.
“So, we’re going a lot of chipping and putting,” coach Patefield added. “Then, of course some of my new girls haven’t played much, if at all in the past. So, we have to start with basics too.”
Denise Kinkaid will be assisting coach Patefield where the team will have 10 girls out this year (most under coach Patefield) with four returning golfers from the varsity team.
The girls golf season will begin at the West Point-Beemer Invite for both WHS and LCC on Friday, August 23 at 9 a.m. in Beemer.
Home events for Wayne this year will be on Friday, August 30 for an invite, a triangular on Tuesday, September 3 (might be moved to Battle Creek), another triangular on September 19 and another invite on September 26.
WHS will play their home outings at the Wayne Country Club.
For Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, they’ll host the LCC Invite on September 28 to end their regular season prior to district competition.
The home course for LCC is the Cedar View Country Club in Laurel.
