WAYNE – After having a trio of junior high wrestling outings cancelled early in November, members on the Wayne Jr. High team have been able to compete in an invite and recently a tournament.
According to assistant wrestling coach at Wayne Community Schools, Terry Beair, the team participated in Plainview last Thursday, November 19 and at Norfolk Catholic this past Monday, November 23.
During the Plainview Invite, Will Leseberg (3-0) placed 1st in the 93 lb class; Zander Liston (3-1) took runner-up in the 104 lb class and Hunter Foote (3-2) finished fourth in the 98 lb class. Other results came from 110 lb Grant Maas (2-2); 135 lb Colten Shepperd (3-2); 145 lb Lakin Stange (0-2) and HWT Lance Stange (0-2).
The coaching staff was very proud of how well the wrestlers performed. “With the guys not having many practice opportunities, our wrestlers wrestled well and never gave up during their matches.”
From the Norfolk Catholic Tournament, Hunter Foote won Jr. High Bracket E; while runner-up finishes came from Zander Liston (Bracket F); Grant Maas (Bracket I); Ty Zach (Bracket M); Colton Shepperd (Bracket Q) and Lance Stange (Bracket X). Lakin Stange placed third in Jr. High Bracket S while Will Leseberg finished fourth in Bracket D.
The coaching staff was really impressed with how the wrestlers competed and handled themselves at the Norfolk Catholic Invite Monday. “The team started off slow and really struggled the first three rounds. The coaches gathered the wrestlers together for a refocus session. The wrestlers responded and finished very strong. We are very proud of how our guys competed and how they conducted themselves at the Invite.”
The coaching staff would also like to extend a huge ‘Thank You’ to the parents and fans for their support of the program.
The team also had the Howells-Dodge tournament cancelled this past Saturday. Next up for the Wayne Junior High wrestlers will be the Battle Creek Tournament on Tuesday, December 1 at 3:30 p.m. while the team will close out their season on Saturday, December 5 with the Schuyler Invite at 8:30 a.m.
The Wayne High varsity wrestlers are slated to begin their season on Thursday, December 3 hosting a triangular at 6 p.m. with Summerland and Wisner-Pilger.
