Wayne High Volleyball Starts Classic 2-0, Wakefield-Allen 0-2

PENDER – Several area high school volleyball teams began or only had a couple matches under their belt before coming into the first day of the 2019 Northeast Nebraska Classic.

From gyms in Pender and Wisner-Pilger, four pools were split into teams of four.

In Pender, Wayne High swept Oakland-Craig (25-20, 25-23) before topping Pender in two sets (25-8, 25-10). WHS improves to 3-0 on the season. Oakland-Craig also swept Pender (25-14, 25-14).

From the win over OC, Lauren Pick recorded a team-high eight kills and seven digs followed by Mikaela McManigal with four kills and Frankie Klausen three kills and six digs. Sydney Redden tallied 15 digs as Hailey Backer added 12. Kiara Krusemark also posted 17 set assists.

During the win against Pender, Pick tacked on another team-high eight kills and seven digs while Frankie Klausen, Emily Armstrong (seven digs) and Rubie Klausen all had four kills. Backer led the dig department with 11 followed by Redden with nine. Krusemark tallied another 12 set assists.

 

Over in Wisner, the Wakefield-Allen volleyball team began their season with a two-set loss against Wisner-Pilger (25-18, 25-17) and then were also swept by West Point-Beemer (25-18, 25-17). The Trojans begin their season at 0-2. Wisner-Pilger topped West Point-Beemer in three sets (23-25, 25-15, 25-22).

Teams will be realigned for bracket play on Saturday back in Pender or Wisner.
