WISNER/PENDER – Several high school volleyball teams took part in Thursday night qualifying triangulars during the 2021 Northeast Nebraska Jean Groth Volleyball Classic.
A total of six matches were held in two gyms at Wisner-Pilger and another six in two gyms at Pender.
Wayne High swept Tekamah-Herman (25-16, 25-16) but suffered a loss in straight sets to Wisner-Pilger (14-25, 15-25) while Wisner-Pilger also swept Tekamah-Herman (25-13, 25-22) in Wisner.
Wayne High will next complete in the Silver Division on Saturday.
From the victory over Tekamah-Herman, Rubie Klausen recorded a team-high seven kills to go along with seven digs and was followed by Kate Hill with six kills and six digs as Leah Perry added five kills. Reagan Backer tallied eight digs to lead the team while Faith Powicki tacked on six digs. Kiara Krusemark finished with 10 set assists, five digs and one kill as Amelia Legler tacked on one kill. Service aces came from Sydney Redden with four, three by Klausen and one each from Mady Sievers and Hill.
During the loss to Wisner-Pilger, Klausen again posted a team-high six kills and 12 digs while Hill added three kills. Backer led the team in digs with 14, Krusemark recorded 12 set assists, Legler and Perry both had two kills and Sievers added one kill.
Other games in Wisner saw Lutheran High Northeast sweep both Wakefield (25-21, 25-16) and Oakland-Craig (27-25, 25-22) while Oakland-Craig defeated in three sets Wakefield (20-25, 25-20, 25-16). LHNE will compete in the gold bracket, Oakland-Craig in the silver and Wakefield in the bronze.
Matches in Pender favored Guardian Angels Central Catholic sweeping both North Bend Central (25-20, 25-21) and Pender (25-21, 25-22) while North Bend Central swept Pender (25-16, 25-19) as Archbishop Bergan defeated West Point-Beemer in three sets (25-18, 25-17); Bergan vs. BRLD (25-18, 25-17) and BRLD won in three sets over West Point-Beemer (25-21, 24-26, 25-23).
Official pairings will be announced Friday morning for the gold, silver and bronze divisions which will be played in Wisner from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and in Pender from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 4.
