COLUMBUS – Following an outdoor meet at Wayne State College earlier this month, the Wayne High girls and boys track & field team took to the road for an invitational.
From Pawnee Park/Memorial Field in Columbus, the Blue Devils joined seven other teams during the inaugural Jim Puetz Memorial Track Meet hosted by Columbus Scotus. The meet in the past was a relay meet and switched to a new finals-only format this year with the addition of a Distance and Sprint Medley Relay.
Columbus Scotus won the girls division with 115 points while David City Aquinas Catholic won the boys division with 136 points.
The Wayne High girls placed seventh with 41 points while the Blue Devil boys finished seventh with 40 points (just 0.5 points from sixth).
Other girls division team results favored Bennington finishing runner-up with 111 points, one-point ahead of Bishop Neuman who took third (110), South Sioux City placed fourth (84) as both Aquinas Catholic and Columbus Lakeview rounded out the top five with 59.5 points.
Brooklyn Kruse placed second in the shot put (35’ 8 ½”) as the top individual finisher for Wayne High. Andi Belt finished fourth in the triple jump (32’ 2 ¼”), Faith Powicki took fourth in the 1600-meter run (6:21.33) and Kiara Krusemark placed fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:09.58).
The Wayne High distance medley team of Faith Powicki, Virginia Kniesche, Kiara Krusemark and Laura Hasemann came in second (15:29), the 1600-meter sprint medley (Barner, Kniesche, Krusemark and Powicki) placed third (5:12) as the 4×800-meter relay team (Belt, Raegan Maas, Krusemark and Klausen) took fourth (11:54).
In the boys division, Bennington placed second with 122 points, followed by Columbus Lakeview in third (113.5), Bishop Neumann took fourth (74) and South Sioux City rounded out the top five boys teams with 61 points. Columbus Scots recorded 40.5 points to place sixth.
Layne Evans was the top performer for Wayne High winning the 300-meter hurdles (42.53) while Treyton Blecke placed runner-up in high jump (5’10”). Sedjro Agoumba also finished fourth in the triple jump (38’ 5”).
The Wayne High distance medley team of Mason Ley, Layne Evans, Ethan Wibben and Sean Aschoff placed third (13:28) as the 1600-meter sprint medley (Phelps, Judd, Evans and Agoumba) came in third (4:06).
The Wayne High track & field season will continue with the first of two home meets on Tuesday, April 6. Field events will begin at 1 p.m. with running events to follow at 3:15 p.m. during the Blue Devil Invite as teams joining Wayne include Aurora, Boone Central, Boys Town, Columbus Lakeview, Pierce, Columbus Scotus and Wakefield.
