Wayne High Track & Field Athletes Compete In Norfolk Classic, Evans Takes Home Gold With School-Record In 300 Hurdles

NORFOLK – Several athletes across the area participated in a mini-state meet Thursday.

From Johnny Carson Field at Norfolk High School, the best athletes in north central and northeast Nebraska competed against one another during the 27th annual Norfolk Track & Field Classic.

For Wayne High, Brooklyn Kruse posted a season-best performance in the discus to finish fourth (117’ 9”) while also finishing fifth in the shot put (36′ 5 ¼”). The 4×800-meter relay team of Kiara Krusemark, Laura Hasemann, Andi Belt and Faith Powicki finished with a season-best time of 10:28.70 to place fifth.

Andi Belt took eighth in the triple jump (32’ 2”), Faith Powicki finished 10th in the 800-meter run (2:38.64) as Krusemark came in 12th in the 800-meter run (2:44.13).

Jordan Metzler of Wakefield won the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:00.17 (0.01 ahead of runner-up Ashley Ostrand of Pender, 1:00.18), seventh in the triple jump (32′ 10 1/2″) and also competed in the 300-meter hurdles but the link wasn’t posted as of Friday morning.

Anna Lundahl also won discus with a mark of 129′ 2″.

 

Leading the way for the Blue Devil boys saw Layne Evans improve on his school-record 300-meter hurdles by winning the event in a time of 40.72 seconds. Also, the 4×400-meter relay team of Evans, Sedjro Agoumba, Alex Phelps and Reece Wilson-Jaqua used a season-best 3:32.96 to finish third.

 

The 4×100-meter relay team of Evans, Agoumba, Phelps and Koby Nelson finished eighth (46.48), Phelps placed eighth in the 300-meter hurdles (no time available), Jesus Zavala used a season-best 10:27.30 in the 3200-meter run to place eighth and Treyton Blecke came in ninth during the high jump (5’ 10”).

 

Wakefield’s 4×100-meter relay team won the race in a time of 44.50 seconds as did the 4×400-meter relay team receiving gold (3:30.83).

Blake Brown finished runner-up in the 100-meter dash (11.2) and third in the 200-meter dash (23.21). Justin Erb placed runner-up in the 400-meter dash (52.36) and seventh in the 200-meter dash (23.67).

Cade Johnson came in seventh during the 1600-meter run (4:56.08) and Ryan Anderson took ninth in the 3200-meter run (10:47.09).

 

Gabe Escalante of Winside finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (23.48), fifth in the 400-meter dash (52.53) and 13th in the 100-meter dash (11.52).

 

 

The entire Wayne High girls and boys track & field team will return to action on Saturday, May 1 during the Mid State Conference meet in Pierce starting at 10 a.m.
