Wayne High Splits Home Double Header Prior To Hosting Holiday Tourney

WAYNE – Saturday marked the third straight home outing for Wayne High before hosting the 2019 Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout following Christmas.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr high school gymnasium, WHS entertained a conference opponent of the O’Neill Eagles.

During the girls contest, O’Neill held a 10-9 first quarter lead before extending their lead with a 16-12 second quarter. At the break, O’Neill led 26-21. O’Neill then added a 13-11 third quarter while both teams scored 19 points in the final quarter. The Eagles secured the 58-51 victory to now sit 4-1 on the season while Wayne High had their four-game winning streak come to an end at 4-3.

Brooklyn Kruse finished with 19 points and 11 boards while Frankie Klausen added 13 points. Emily Longe tallied nine points as Rubie Klausen tacked on two points and 10 rebounds.


From the boys game, Wayne High jumped ahead thanks to a pair of 20-point quarters while only giving up 15 first half points. O’Neill then started to mount a comeback with a 14-9 third quarter before Wayne High closed out the game 17-9 in the fourth. Final saw Wayne High win 65-38 to improve to 3-4 while the Eagles fell to 1-3.

Tyrus Eischeid paced WHS in scoring with 16 points and eight boards. Cody Rogers followed with 12 points as Shea Sweetland poured in 11 points. Trevor DeBoer also tallied eight points.

The Wayne High girls and boys will next open the Wayne Holiday Tourney on Friday, December 27 at 7/8:30 p.m. against Pender from Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College.
