Wayne High Puts Homerun Ball To Use, Earns Semi-Final Berth Against Beatrice

HASTINGS – Following a morning victory for the Wayne High softball team, round two of the 2019 NSAA State Tournament continued with a pair of winner’s bracket Class B games.

Back at the Smith Softball Complex, #4 Wayne took on #8 Seward Wednesday evening. WHS topped the Bluejays 3-0 and 2-0 during the subdistrict round in Wayne October 7-8.

Just like in the first game, Wayne High took control right from the start thanks to a lead-off homerun on the first pitch of the game for Kendall Dorey. The Blue Devils scored four in the opening inning before tacking on another three in the second and one run in the fourth to run-rule the Bluejays 8-0 in five innings. WHS has won 27 straight and are 32-3 on the season while Seward fell to 21-14.

Hope O’Reilly was credited with a three-run homerun while adding a RBI and run scored as Tori Kniesche singled twice and homered to lead Wayne at the plate. Brooklyn Kruse singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored; Dorey had the leadoff solo homerun; Taytum Sweetland singled and drove in a run; Kayla Fleming singled and scored twice as Virginia Kniesche and Hailey Schroeder both scored for Wayne.

Tori Kniesche picked up the complete game shutout victory in five innings for her 11th no-hitter on the season striking out 11 batters and hitting one.

The other Class B winner’s bracket game saw #2 Beatrice comeback and scored 13 runs in the fifth inning to run-rule #3 Crete, 16-8. Class B elimination games Thursday morning will feature #1 Omaha Skutt Catholic vs. #5 Hastings and #6 Omaha Gross Catholic vs. #7 Norris at 9 a.m. Crete will face the winner of Skutt/Hastings and Seward will await the winner of Gross/Norris at 11:30 a.m.

The winner’s bracket semifinal is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday between #4 Wayne and #2 Beatrice.

#2 GACC also topped #6 Arlington, 10-0 to advance to the Class C semifinals against #1 Fairbury at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
