Wayne High Produces 10 Runs Off 10 Hits In Season Opening Victory

WAYNE – Following a pair of postponements earlier this week, the Wayne High baseball team was able to take to the diamond with a northeast Nebraska opponent.

From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, the Blue Devils began the 2021 season with Thurston-Cuming County Thursday evening.

It’s been since early May of 2019 that WHS was last in action and the Blue Devils struck early scoring seven runs in the opening two innings to win 10-3 over Thurston-Cuming County. Wayne High opened their season at 1-0 while the TC Thunder fell to 0-3.

WHS outscored Thurston-Cuming County 4-1 in the first and 3-1 in the second before bringing in two more runs in the fourth to lead 9-2. Wayne scored a run in the home half of the sixth while the TC Thunder produced a run in the top of the seventh. Final again favored the Wayne High baseball team, 10-3.

Brooks Kneifl shined on night one with a single, double, homerun, two RBI and one run scored while Jaxson Mrsny doubled and accounted for four runs batted in.

Victor Kniesche singled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice; James Dorcey singled twice and scored twice; Reid Korth singled and scored twice; Jacob Kneifl singled; Calvin Starzl scored twice as Devin Anderson scored once.

Brooks Kneifl picked up the win in five and two-thirds allowing two runs off two hits while striking out 11 batters and walking one. James Dorcey worked an inning allowing an earned run off one hit while walking one batter as Nolan Hunke pitched a third of an inning walking and striking out one batter each.


The TC Thunder were led by Braxton Volk with a double and RBI while Brennan Ferguson and Aiden Beckman both scored. Nathan Breitbarth, Spencer Rabbass and Michael Cooney all scored.

Brayden Hegge suffered the loss in an inning and a third allowing seven runs (six earned) off five hits while striking out two batters and walking four. Rabbass worked four and two-thirds allowing three runs (two earned) off five hits while striking out one batter and allowing the homerun.

The Wayne High baseball team will next host Wahoo/Bishop Neumann/Lincoln Lutheran on Friday, March 26 during a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m. The Wahoo team is now 1-3 following a 3-2 loss at Seward Thursday.
