Wayne High Improves To 4-1 Thanks To Late Munsell Interception, Bartos With Three Touchdowns

WAYNE – A pair of top 10 Class C1 high school football teams in Nebraska took to the turf on the Wayne State College campus Friday night.

From Bob Cunningham Field, Wayne High welcomed in Battle Creek. The Blue Devils are rated #6 in the Lincoln Journal Star and #10 in the Omaha World Herald while the Braves entered the weekend #6 in the OWH and #9 in the LJS.

With both teams coming off week four losses against ranked opponents, Wayne High held on for a one-score home victory of 21-14. WHS improved to 4-1 while Battle Creek fell to 3-2.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Wayne High opened scoring following a Brandon Bartos touchdown with 6:25 left until halftime (missed PAT) while Bartos scored once more on a receiving touchdown from Tanner Walling with 3:25 left in the opening half (2 pt. conversion good) to lead 14-0.

Battle Creek answered with late second quarter score with about 30 second left until half (missed PAT) to go into the break trailing, 14-6.

Battle Creek put a long third quarter drive together out of the break which ended with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 4:40 left in the third quarter. The game was tied 14-14.

Wayne High answered with an early fourth quarter score again using the legs of Bartos with 9:13 left in the game (PAT good) to regain the lead at 21-14.

Ashton Munsell recorded an interception with six minutes left in the game to stop a potential scoring drive from Battle Creek as Wayne High ran out the clock.

Final favored Wayne High over Battle Creek, 21-14.

Wayne High will next host Norfolk Catholic on Friday, October 1 at 7 p.m.
