Wayne High Girls, Boys Build Off Slow Starts During Road Sweep

WISNER – The Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams began a two-game road weekend Friday evening.

From Wisner-Pilger Public Schools, WHS visited Wisner-Pilger.

The Wayne girls defeated Wisner-Pilger, 55-42 while the Blue Devil boys won 64-37 over the Gators.

During the girls game, Wayne closed out the opening quarter on a strong note to lead 12-4. WHS extended their lead thanks to a 13-10 second to go up 25-14 at the break. The Blue Devils then outscored Wisner-Pilger 11-8 in the third as the Gators held a slight advantage in the fourth, 20-19. Final again favored Wayne High 55-42 who improved to 3-3 while the Gators fell to 1-4, dropping back-to-back.

WHS was led in scoring by sophomore Brooklyn Kruse with 20 points, senior Emily Longe added 10 points and junior Rubie Klausen finished with nine points. Junior Mikaela McManigal tallied seven points, freshman Frantzdie Barner had three points while junior Mia Nelsen, freshman Katy Jones and freshman Kierah Haase all scored two points.

Wayne High shot 17-26 from the foul line.

Junior Adison Meyer paced the Gators in scoring with 18 points followed by junior Lindsey Kneifl with 11 points. Junior Kayla Svoboda added seven points, seniors Macy Stuhr and Tymarie Ott both scored two points while junior Kennedie Ott and sophomore Maggie Schweers both had a point.

The Gators shot 9-14 from the foul line.

From the boys contest, Wayne held a slight 6-5 first quarter lead before taking control in the second quarter, 21-10. WHS led 27-15 at the break. The Blue Devils also outscored the Gators 16-10 in the third and 21-12 in the fourth to win 64-37. WHS improved to 5-1 overall (4-0 on road) while Wisner-Pilger dropped their second straight game to now sit 2-3.

Wayne High had 10 different contributors score led by junior Brandon Bartos and sophomore Daniel Judd with 11 points, senior Treyton Blecke added 10 points while junior Tanner Walling and freshman Andrew Jones both finished with nine points. Senior Nolan Hunke and junior Camron Weaselhead both tallied four points while senior Jacob Kneifl, senior Colton Vovos and sophomore Sedjro Agoumba came away with two points each.

WHS shot 12-18 from the foul line.

Senior Regan Bellar recorded a team-high 11 points for Wisner-Pilger while junior Spencer Batenhorst added seven points. Sophomore Jackson Knust and senior Klay Koehlmoos both scored five points, junior Beau Ruskamp tallied four points, sophomore Hunter Palmer finished with three points and senior Payton Biermann poured in two points.

Wisner-Pilger finished 3-5 from the foul line.
