Wayne High Football Secures Road Victory Over Top Five Lakeview

COLUMBUS – Following a pair of home wins to open the season for Wayne High, WHS took to the road Friday night against a top five opponent.

From Columbus, the Blue Devils competed at #3/#4 Columbus Lakeview.

Wayne High defeated Columbus Lakeview 30-17 to improve to 3-0 while the Vikings fell to 1-2.

Scoring began with 7:25 left in the opening quarter when senior quarterback Tanner Walling connected with junior wide receiver Alex Phelps on an 18-yard score. WHS failed to convert the two-point conversion to lead 6-0.

Columbus Lakeview then got on the board with a field goal two minutes into the second quarter to trail, 6-3.

WHS closed the half with two scores on a rushing touchdown from senior running back Brandon Bartos around the eight-minute mark and Walling on a one-yard score with 1:18 left in first half. Both two-point conversions were good to lead 22-3 at the break.

In the second half, Columbus Lakeview used a nine-yard rushing score with 7:35 remaining in the third as Wayne High’s Bartos answered with his own nine-yard rushing TD with 27 seconds left in the quarter. The two-point conversion was good for Wayne to lead 30-10.

The lone fourth quarter scoring came from Columbus Lakeview on an eight-yard run with five seconds left.

Junior Ashton Munsell accounted for two interceptions as Walling also recorded an INT for Wayne.

Final favored Wayne High, 30-17.
